We were en route from hambantota to yala and werent planning to stop at bundala but had heard that yala was underwater. so instead we decided to break up the journey by visiting bundala but also as an insurance incase we didnt see any wildlife at yala.
Im so glad we did. We contacted srimal at 9 o clock monday night and he and a driver arrived promptly at 11 o clock the next morning. Before wed even pulled into bundala we had seen 3 huge crocodiles just lounging at the side of the road. We then went on to spend the most amazing 2 hours in the wetlands with stunning migratory and local birdlife, golden jackal, monkeys, deer, THOUSANDS of crocodiles and yes……even an obligatory elephant! (Incredible considering the heavy non stop rains). Whats more we were the ONLY jeep in the whole 6000 hectares so could just sit and enjoy the sounds of the wildlife.

Srimal and driver were absolute pro’s at their game..,they read our needs really well, feeding our 4 year old biscuits to keep her happy and keeping the safari to a perfect length so we didnt get restless but felt we got our moneys worth

Such a shame this place isnt as researched or valued as the bigger parks and srimal deserves a national medal for his devotion to wildlife. But enjoy it whilst its a wonderful unknown treasure as im sure it wont be long before the hotels and tourist start looking flocking in looking for an alternative to yala.

Thank you srimal 🙏 +94 77 959 9397

If you are into bird watching then this place is paradise. We saw more than 40 species on a morning safari. We were also lucky enough to see an elephant, jackal, hare, wild boar, buffaloes and crocodiles. Our mandatory park guide (W. H. Pubudu) was first class with an ability to identify species with ease, and our driver A. G. Ranjith (organised through our accommodation (V Cabanas) in Tissamaharama) was also brilliant at spotting wildlife. Would definitely go back,

Transport, to Bundala, was organised through the hotel and was very efficient. The driver was really nice and very informative. We arrived at the park and before we even entered saw all types of birds and a number of crocodiles. We arrived at the ticket office and were joined by a guide who was extremely knowledgeable and knew where to look and what to look for. The place was beautiful and I would strongly recommend a visit to all bird lovers and generally to anyone who enjoys nature. The birds we saw included: swamp hens, green kingfishers, blue tailed kingfishers, purple herons, eagles, bee eaters etc. Animals we saw included: elephants, mongeese, water buffalo, land monitors, 2 species of monkey, hares etc. I absolutely loved this experience and there was no one else there, which made it even better!

This is the place for bird-watchers! The only disappointment (and the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 - is that you are not allowed to leave your jeep. I'm sure there are good reasons for this, but it is frustrating.

In contrast to the madhouse at Yala NP, this is a less traveled venue so the roads are not as rutty which makes for a wonderful safari experience. In addition to the abundant bird life one can see elephants and monkeys at close reange.

Quite a small park but pleasant for a morning or afternoon's excursion. The visitor centre is impressive with interesting displays of animal skeletons. We visited after a period of heavy rain and although we did not see many large animals, 1 elephant and a few deer and monkeys, the higher water level meant that the road was half in and out of the water for quite a stretch, which made it fun in the jeep. I think it would be much less interesting in the dry season. Overall not a lot to see although the stop at a bluff overlooking the sea was worthwhile. Not as crowded as Yala. I score it very good because of the higher water level, otherwise average.

This national park is much better than Yale. I saw much more animals and there are almost NO people inside (opposite to Yale, which is more like a race, car chasing leopard)

Visited the national park in the morning (approx 6:45am Start) and had an amazing time. The guide that was included in the entrance fee was a really lovely chap who was both informative and enthusiastic. He clearly had a great interest in the wildlife here. We saw lots of different types of birds as well as Jackals, Buffalo, Boar, Deer, Lizards etc.

Was quiet which is bitter-sweet really, it's a shame to not see more people visiting the Park (we were out of season though) but also it meant that we weren't surrounded by lots of other Jeeps.
Highly recommended!

This park is the best of the three in southern Sri Lanka. We saw almost no other jeeps here. Much better than the mess at Yala.
