The town is very beautiful. We walked around the castle, checking out the churches, wandering narrow streets and alleys, stopped at multiple viewpoints to take lots of beautiful pictures. They have many great spots where you can get lots of great photos of the town.
Their central square is very cute and the castle is pretty.
The town is very cute and is not teeming with tourists which makes the experience amazing and very relaxed. We enjoyed visiting the town and it was a lot of fun walking around and having a relaxed day.
Would definitely recommend visiting as it is very beautiful and relaxing town to enjoy, a lot more enjoyable experience than the more popular towns.

A beautiful place to visit, peaceful and cool in the summer heat. A range of lovely places to eat and gorgeous churches.
If you want a morning wandering amongst traditional buildings with lovely views, this is the place

It was probably the best thing we did. We coved the Island from one end to the other, dined in 3 different places, and been to every single attraction. We took a tiny Nissan and it costed us (back then in 2010) about 70 Euros, and we kept driving around all day and evening. We took pictures every where. Stopped at the most amazing views around the sunset. The Island breathtaking. The beaches, the white Mediterranean style houses, the sea-side restaurants - an amazingly romantic place to be. Can't wait to go back again.

I'm not sure why this place is called the cultural village. To me it felt more like a residential village with real residents instead of tourists. However you don't see much of their houses or maybe the houses weren't in the path up to the highest point in Pyrgos.
To get to Pyrgos you need to take bus 20 from Fira. It is the same bus to get to Perissa but you only pay 1.60 Euro. However, not all buses to Perissa gets you to Pyrgos. Only the buses that leave on the hour e.g 4pm, 5pm, 6pm. The full schedule can be found at the Fira Bus Terminal. Make sure you ask the driver or bus conductor when you board the bus.
The bus stops at Santo Wine, Pyrgos Restaurant, and Pyrgos town. The stop at Pyrgos town is closest to the cathedrals. You can take the bus back to Fira from the same bus stop at Pyrgos town. It is at a roundabout surrounded by shops. If I'm not mistaken, the last bus that leaves Pyrgos for Fira is at 8:45pm. Please confirm this with the driver or at the info centre.

As the name implies, Pyrgos is that kind of village you are looking for when going to Santorini with the huge difference that there are by far not those crowds you bump into in Oia and Fira. The silence will make you feel like actually exploring though there are postcard shops as well which seem to be more high class though (not in terms of the prices but in terms of what they offer). Getting there from Fira won't take you too long, roughly between 15 and 20 mins. Check for the times in advance.
There was a great musician, cute cafes and restaurants but mainly it was authentic and not too touristy. There are all the steps and white houses of Fira and Oia, too.
Worth a visit? Absolutely.

During a tour of the Greek Islands with Gate 1, my spouse and I, along with six others, spent three peaceful days in a hotel a short walk (10 minutes) down the road from town.
Off the beaten tourist path, Pyrgos is one of the oldest settlements on Santorini. It is a jumble of weather-beaten medieval houses stacked on top of one another on a hill, which is topped by a Venetian fortress. Climbing through the maze of narrow alleys and stairways, one can spend a pleasant few hours exploring. And it offers sweeping views of the island and the Aegean. While Pyrgos today has only about 500 residents, if offers many restaurants and tavernas.
A local bus will take you the short distance to Fira for only 1.80 Euros. From there, it is easy to get to Oia on another local bus that also costs 1.80 Euros.

I expected to see castles and ruins but this turned out to be an interesting maze of steps and alleys leading to quaint restaurants, shops and even a tiny church that was open to the public. The doors were open wide but no one was present in this well preserved chapel Candles flickered and the aroma of antique was amazing. Many photo opps. If you have time, check it out.

We took the local bus from Fira to Pyrgos. It was very cheap 1.80 euros each way per person and it only took 20 minutes to get there. We were dropped off at the little square where there are a few small restaurants and the obligatory tourist shops.
If you go to Pyrgos you have to take the walk/hike up the hill to see the the remnants of the old castle. It's a hike but there are a few tourist shops full f the usual souvenirs along the way. Good to stop and catch your breath at these shops.
I was a bit disappointed in the castle. I thought there would be a lot more to it than there actually was. It's really just remnants and some of it is just too dangerous to go into it. You would do so at your own risk.
What is quite lovely at the top of the hill is a beautiful little church, well maintained. Still in use and absolutely lovely inside. There's a place to sit outside to get your wind back.
Of course, going back downhill is much easier. I would say to give yourself 1 1/2 hours to visit this area.

Ok yeah there is a business running a small museum in town called the "Cultural Village" and thanks to Insol69 for his review and photos of that museum.
The museum is interesting and worth a visit but the reason to come is for this white-washed, blue-domed gem of a hill town. the town starts at the bottom of the hill winds it's way via numerous twists and turns to the top where you'll find a large church and the remains of the castle that once topped this hill. The streets are not wide enough for cars and there is no plan or order to it. every few hundred feet you will be faced with the difficult choice of turning left or right and both paths will be inviting. We spent almost 2 hours here and did not hit all the streets. However if you are pressed for time you could make it up to the castle ruins in 10-15 minutes if you can keep yourself from being distracted, petting cats and taking photos

Hi, I'd like to ask questions in general about Santorini and other islands.
1) How do you travel around Santorini? We can't drive. I read travel guides saying there are buses which are not on time and reliable. Also, taxi, what are the prices, do they go by meters or a fixed price? and will there be any overpriced kinds of stuff? How can we avoid them?
2) How do you usually travel to other islands, and via what websites did you use to book tickets.
3) anything we shouldn't miss in Santorini? We planned to stay in the middle area, Thera (Fira), believing that its the best place for sunset as a Greek friend suggested us so. Thought, a few reviews saying that the top part, Oia (Thira), is the best part to see the sunset. And 1-2 nice restaurants that we must visit for good taste (also nice views), we prefer an average price tho.
4) what food do we have to try, apart from many types of cheese and wines (If there's any special type of cheese, that'd be nice to know)
5) Any local market or supermarket that we can find snacks, drinks, and especially cheap wines?
Thank you for your time, really appreciated.

Depends how much time you have! We did a half day tour which included Oia,Santo Winery and Prygos which was very good with lots of variety of things to see and do.
We didn't bother with Fira and the volcano as we had already visited one elsewhere .
Thira is an amazing place to visit if you have the time but need to book transport unless you are a fit walker!
