About
Elefantastic Elephant Sanctuary, a unique conservation project set in Jaipur, Rajasthan has been in operation since in the 2000's with a goal to provide a sanctuary and elephant rehabilitation center. Mission: To protect and conserve elephants in a natural environment and to provide a healthy and fruitful life for all those creatures under our care. The rehabilitation center is owned and managed by a former Elephant Rider (Rahul) and focuses on healthcare and breeding management. Although Rehabilitation Center was established in 2012, my family involvement with elephants dates to over four generations; before the Rehabilitation Center materialized, As I pondered about the possibilities, I realized that I want to give people an insight into the lives of Asian elephants. There are vast misconceptions across India that animals - especially elephants – are badly mistreated. I decided that I wanted to eradicate these misconceptions. This decision inspired me to start The Elefantastic.

We had an amazing time meeting Laila, the elephant, and hanging out with her. We enjoyed petting, walking, painting, then bathing her. Lunch at the owner’s house afterwards was a really nice touch that we really appreciated plus the food was great. Also getting picked up and dropped off by a driver was very helpful.

Elephantastic was a truly fantastic experience! We fed female elephants with hay and bananas :) then we washed an elephant and played with water together.

Getting there is not the easiest as the location in Google Maps shows the business registration address (a residential house) rather than the place with elephants.
-> go to the main gate of the Elephant Village and call Elephantastic to pick you up from there. Ensure that your tuktuk driver will not push you into visiting one of many other elephant businesses within the Elephant Village campus!

Amazing experience! They coordinated pick up and drop off from our hotel. The driver was on time.
We were the only group there and it didn’t feel crowded or touristy at all. My boyfriend and I were able to feed, paint (non toxic) and bathe an elephant. We got to sit on the elephant as well (no riding which i was fine with). The elephants seem to be treated very well. All the staff were knowledgeable and helpful. They provided plenty of cold water and even chai!
definitely bring a change of clothes/wear something you don’t mind getting a little dirty! I recommend water shoes or old sneakers too.
Great experience would highly recommend.

It was a dream to be able to interact with such a majestic animal. Her name was Shaku and we were very grateful that she let us so close to her. It was a morning time so we first feed her with some bananas and then with some grass. It was an amazing experience especially watching her enjoying the bananas and skillfully grabbing them with the trunk and putting them in the mouth.

We refused to color her because it sounded weird to us. Then we were enjoying the bath together and scrub her skin. It was hilarious being sprayed with the water from her trunk!

Then we went on a 30 minute walk with her around the Elephant village. Elefantastic itself does not allow riding elephants, but many other companies in the village are still allowing this practice so we also saw many tourists (local and foreign) riding the elephants. Some with saddle and some without. I know that this is the tradition of these area, but some historic practices should simply be abandoned as the society progresses and we grow our understanding of animal welfare and animal psychology. Not many decades ago slavery and human zoos were seen as normal - and then it changed. Likewise, the exploitation of animals for slavery and entrepreneurship cannot be accepted nowadays.

We were assured that Elefantastic is the exception among the other providers in the Elephant village and Amber fort and that they never chain the elephants! Later we were also lucky to see other Elefantastic elephants freely and happily roaming around:)

p.s.: And I almost forgot about the lunch! It was delicious and simple homemade lunch. A refreshing difference from the heavy and greasy restaurant curries. Easily one of the best we've had in India.

I’m always skeptical about visiting places where you can interact with wildlife because little do we know about how the animals are really treated after hours. Growing up in India I’ve always seen elephants around the streets with chains around them and never wanted to support anything that might encourage that but after some extensive research we were able to find Elefantastic. This place is a safe home and sanctuary for the elephants who were mistreated/ abandoned and Rahul and his coworkers make sure that these gentle giants never have to experience the trauma they did in the past. They also include free transportation between your hotel to the facility and back.

Upon entering the facility we walked over to a shed like area where we saw 2 elephants with their caretakers having their breakfast. These elephants seemed at peace, they weren’t bound to anything and were free to roam if they wished. Before having the chance to touch or interact with these elephants, Rahul pulled us to the side and explained to us that elephants are very emotional creatures and it’s important that we speak to them and look them in the eye to gain their trust.

Rahul then walked us over to interact with Chanda who was as sweet as can be. She allowed us to pet her, feed her, shower her and walk her. We chose not to paint her (even though the colors they use are safe for elephant skin and natural) because we are no artists nor do we know what the elephants think of being painted. However, the family that was with us chose to paint their elephant and she didn’t seem to mind at all, so it’s all personal preference. The caretaker of Chanda was sweet and we were so surprised to see how she listened to all his instructions. I was also sure to check the elephants legs and feet for any chain marks or any indication that they might be bound but happy to find nothing.

After the whole interaction we went to Rahul’s home where his mother was an incredibly generous host and fed us some of the best food we’ve had in India. The food was freshly made and completely vegetarian which was great!

After our meal we realized we never got to thank Chanda’s caretaker so we had our driver take us back to the farm where we found Chanda walking with her caretaker for the second time (another indication that this facility doesn’t just board up the elephants after the visitors have left). We thanked the caretaker for dedicating so much of his time and his life taking such good care of her and said our goodbyes to Chanda. We thanked her for allowing us to spend the day with her and the opportunity to experience such an emotional and peaceful day with her.

If you are an animal lover and want to experience an up close and personal interaction with these sweet creatures I would highly recommend Elefantastic.

My wife found this place while the whole internet generally showed Hathi Gaon as the top preference.
We were smitten by the idea of being the care taker of the elephant. Champa, the adorable mother elephant was the one with whom we had to spend our day. Right from feeding her sugarcanes, to painting her, to showering her, to taking her for a stroll and seeing her enjoy the company of another elephant friend, it was like living a dream.
Top mention- Making our experience even more enriched, were the 2 cute pitbulls and a naughty turkey. Absolutely, icing on the cake!
Hats off to Mr Rahul Chaudhary and his team for their sincerity and dedication.

Let me state that I am an animal lover/activist and very aware of animal exploitation.

While visiting India I witnessed many working elephants/animals in general in the street which broke my heart. It’s easy to get angry and not want to support the industry. I completely agree with that, but do realize the elephant in India is tradition and I respect that this is their way of life. I researched elephant sanctuaries in Jaipur and also researched elephant experiences out of curiosity. Elephantastic was the most humane one I found. I booked the experience last minute on a Sunday for a Monday. They were very accommodating. I read the bad reviews where people said the phone calls were rude, but I don’t think they understand the Indian culture of being short and to the point, also English is the second language for the owners, so cut them some slack.

I found it confusing to book as they don’t have a direct link on their website to purchase the experience. You must first email them to then have them reply and set up the encounter.

Our experience was 10,200 rupees which was worth EVERY PENNY. If you love animals, this is for you. You are as up close and personal as you want to be. It started with a pickup at our hotel by an amazing driver who was friendly and English speaking. He gave us a tour of the city on our way to the sanctuary.

When we got there, it didn’t look like much but our minds were quickly changed. We had a quick safety talk with the owner and then we were introduced to the elephants. They were a great weight, appear healthy, and happy. We fed them bananas to gain their trust then spent a ton of time petting, loving on her, and speaking with her personal keeper, asking any questions we had. The employees were all friendly and answered all of my inquiries. We continued to take photos while feeding her.

We then gave her a shower which she absolutely loved. The kids in the group next to us painted their elephant (nontoxic) but we passed. We then bathed her where you could see she loved it. From there we walked her (you have to walk through elephant village which is sad because other companies chain their elephants) but once you get to the trail it’s nice and you can see the elephant watering hole. If you’re lucky you can see an elephant happy and bathing. When we got back we were taxi’d to the owners moms house for the most incredible vegetarian food. Easily the best I’ve had while traveling india. The driver then took us back to the hotel. He was sweet and remembered the places we had told him about wanting to check out while making small talk that morning… he brought us to a beautiful textile store and a blue pottery store and also recommended a place for dinner.

Overall, I recommend Elephantastic because they are keeping the Indian tradition alive while offering an alternative to tourists who want to interact with ele’s. They are the most humane option and I choose to support that. I have told my friends about it and will come back the next time I am in Jaipur.

I usually do not visit places where you can interact with wildlife due to questionable practices that can potentially cause suffering to the animals. But Elefantastic is something else. This is a sanctuary for mistreated elephants that have been adopted by Rahul and his coworkers.

Shaku, the elephant that we got the chance to spend 4 hours with, is an amazing elephant who was once a riding elephant on Amber Fort. Rahul, the founder of this place, was her mahout for 7 years. In 2012, Rahul changed his approach. What Rahul and his team are trying to do is to give an example of a place where animals are treated with respect. 24 elephants live there in total, of which 6 were adopted and 18 were born on the farm.

Elefantastic is located in a village with many elephant riding businesses, where elephants are chained and ridden with painful saddles or blankets on their backs. Elefantastic thankfully took a different approach - it is forbidden to ride, chain or cause any other pain/suffering to elephants. They provide space for them to roam around (cca 13 hectares I think) and take great care of them. Each elephant has her or his own caretaker from morning until evening - they feed them with enough food, wash them, and even put coconut oil on their skin every week in the winter season. As you can see, those are not wild animals, since they were brought up by humans. They say the elephants are educated because they understand 30+ word commands.

The elephants can interact with each other - communicate, play, fight, sleep, eat together, etc. In their living space, they have a big shade, water tanks, trees, and can roam around freely (around the area is a fence/wall of course). However, this all happens on another farm so we were not able to see their living space. The place where you interact with elephants is on a different location, where one elephant comes once every 3 weeks for 4-5 hours, or more frequently in the peak season.

One problematic thing I noticed is that male elephants are taken away by the officials because they are not allowed to be kept, presumably presenting danger. They said they are sent to north, where they are not released into wilderness but raised in captivity.

I am grateful to Shaku for letting us in her space, and to Rahul for leading by example. I also feel optimistic that more people will realize that we should treat animals as we would like to be treated ourselves. I hope in the future, no elephant will need to serve humans. Wilderness is afterall their natural habitat.

Best experience ever! Would 100% recommend this to anyone visiting jaipur as it’s not far at all from the city, and a car will take you there and back included in the price! Shaku the elephant and all the staff made this the best experience, we felt so so lucky and it was so clear the elephants are well looked after! Lunch afterwards was amazing - food and people were great! Considering all aspects of this experience, Elefantastic is such good value for money and I would definitely come again!! Thank you to everyone who helped us today, you made the experience even better!!
