1st artisanal fishing port in Charente-Maritime...
The description given on the tourist office website was very enticing. Very disappointed by this visit. The port having been moved, there are very few boats in the old port. The shopping street is not of much interest either, except for tourism perhaps. Perhaps we should have opted for a guided tour.

    To see
I'll give a paradoxical review. Every time I come on holiday to Charente-Maritime, at least one day is devoted to the island of Oléron. And, during that day, there is always a walk to La Cotinière or a restaurant meal there. It is an almost ritual step that allows you to have a good time with your family, to do some shopping and to remember our old passages. And yet, paradoxically, I share some mixed, even negative reviews. La Cotinière, in absolute terms, is nothing rare. It is a nice little port on the ocean certainly although well concreted in places. It is also a pier and one or two shopping streets, not even pedestrian, often very busy, where we are not always well received. The rest are other anonymous streets and even more soulless housing estates.

    nice surprise
"Nice little place. It is soon (too) busy in La Cotiniere. You can therefore find all the shops that can be found everywhere in busy seaside resorts. You will discover the special surroundings directly outside the centre, both on the sea/ocean side and inland. Also with bad weather (wind and rain) enjoyed the stay and in addition it is alsoj a good outage; basis to discover the rest of the island. Ile de Oleron is definitely worth a visit.

We stayed in Continiere, not realising it is one of the busiest places on the island. The harbour is fairly large considering the amount of other little ports dotted around Oleron. Lots of fishing vessels and a great deal of activity. It is a popular tourist spot and a great place for people watching. This is the place for people who like being around other people yet still feel some Oleron authenticity. As ports go on the island, this isn't the prettiest or with the best views but their appears to be always something going on.

We wouldn’t call it the prettiest of fishing villages that we have been to. The time of the year that we went it was busy. The cabins selling fresh fish were very popular. We bought fish and chips from one which were very tasty. The roads as you would expect were right and busy. Do watch out for the seagulls!

The place is not unpleasant, but has not much original to offer. There are a couple of restaurants, a couple of shops and people strolling in front of the boats... just an harbor like many others, but this is true that in co parison with other places on the island it's almost Manhattan!

Once a charming port, totally distorted and disfigured by the work undertaken and the construction of horrible buildings, a second dike which obstructs any view of the sea... No more old trawls in the adorable little port. I hadn't been here for 10 years, quite a shock. What a massacre! Not to mention the infamous shops on the main street, which only sell low-end junk made in China. What interest ?!

My wife and I swapped our cottage on Cape Cod for a converted, ancient winery building turned summer place. It turned out to be a charming little gallery of the family's eclectic art. Though a popular tourist destination for the French, It seemed we were the only foreigners on the 7.5 mile long, enchanting island. We spent two wonderful weeks in the heat of July, walking endless beaches, finding delightful little restaurants and riding bikes. Our best rides were to the early morning open markets. The bread, local cheeses and wines made charming, memorable picnics. Tiny roads wound endlessly past small farms of shrimp, oysters and mussels and micro-towns dotted with historic structures. We took the boat from Boyardville to Fort Boyard on nearby Ile d'Aix. Several times we bought fish at the fishing village of La Cotiniere, and later sampled a couple of nice restaurants there too. We visited the Chateau, of course, but the greatest feature of this unexpected little island was that there were few "destinations." Ile D'Oleron needs nothing beyond its quaint, hidden towns, unremarkable markets, vast beaches and natural beauty. I bought a fishing rod, drove up to Phare de Chassiron as the sun rose and watched the locals to discover good spots. Not an easy place to go, but oh so wonderful! Bon chance.

The port itself is well worth a visit, and there are numerous pleasant restaurants and cafes/bars in the harbour area.

On a bost delivery from Royan to Plymouth when the engine packed up. Got a tow in by a friendly French fishing boat then looked on trip advisor for a hotel. The L'Eceiller was the nearest and would really recommend it. The food was fantastic, location fantastic, rooms fantastic, owners and staff couldn't do enough for you. The only down and when I say small it's only minor was the breakfast was average and the curtains in my room were difficult to close without standing on a chair.
The island is like going back in time to 1970 with long sandy beaches and endless days of summer.

Even though it's work what a find breaking down in La Cotiniere.

Delightful village with working fishing port. Also direct access to a sandy beach with rock pools at low tide. Shops & restaurants well set out. Would probably be crowded in high season.

A small harbour surrounded by old fishing huts, now small tourist shops. All very attractive, and interesting. A large number of restaurants, and we found the ideal for us at La Sardinerie.
