A fascinating glimpse into an ancient settlement
This was an amazing site. We knew nothing about this bronze age settlement before visiting sardinia but it was well worth the visit. You have to go with a guide, so occasionally you need to wait for a bit at the ticket office until the next tour in English. We went late afternoon and waited 10 minutes for an English speaking guide to come free and there ended up only being four in our group. There's no shade so hats recommended and certainly good shoes. The climb up and into the main towers is by a steep rock and stone staircase and you have to duck to avoid the low ceilings so care needed. However it is worth it to be able to see and experience these ancient structures.

    A great morning
Public transport is barely operational (1 train a day at 14.05 from Cagliari and one has to spend the night) so a car is necessary. I don't drive so booked a tour through my hotel with "Sardinia Dream Tours". Francesca was punctual and the morning was great. She had copious amounts of information, not only regarding the Nuraghe but also about Sardegna's existence and even its foods. The Nuraghe is fascinating and a must is the Zapata museum with a swing past the Domus de Janas on the return. Well worth it. Grazie mille.

Up Close Look at Sardinia’s Ancient History
Sardinia has these ancient ruins located throughout the island but this location has one of the larger ones and it’s being excavated. It’s impressive to climb the stairs and walk both in and around the extensive site. A few pieces of advice, this tour is for people with good mobility— the stones can be slippery, the low passages require you to be able to bend down and there is a bit of walking. We took a private guide and that proved to be a bit complicated as we had to wait for the site guides to bring us into the ruins themselves. It made for a crowded experience.

You do need to go on a tour to see the sites so worth checking times beforehand but they really do bring it all to life and explain things you would otherwise miss but you can walk around the lower parts after the tour finishes. Getting into the keep is a bit of a squeeze up some steep steps but worth it.
There are lots of these sites all over the island but this is the best preserved and there is a museum on it in the village.

14 entrance fee and you can only access with a guided tour (included in the price). The tour lasts a little bit more of 30minutes and you are very limited to take photos and you can not walk around.
I understand that if you don't do like that, tourist will destroy everything.
The complex is not very big and I think is a little overpriced.

There are several Nuraghen in Sardinia, but we found this the most interesting and complete one. Visiting is only possible with a guide. Our guide was absolutely of added value because he told a lot about its history, so that we understood better what these Nuraghen actually are. You can go inside the Nuraghe, which was quite spectacular. Highly recommended!!

Very interesting site which must be visited with a guide. Our guide was lovely but had limited English which meant that it was difficult to ask questions. There is a particularly tight spot which must be navigated by all visitors. This created a delay in the visit which was surprising for a visit in the quiet part of the year.

The site organizes tours every half hour of the site. It is comprised of the main quadrangle of towers (starting about 15C BCE) and adjoining more recent iron age dwellings. The high of the towers is impressive, particularly the inner chambers. There is also a deep (50 m) well in the center. Difficult to image how this was dug in the search for water. There is a good view of the site and Las Plassas from the tower. Going down inside the tower, partially on what I presume are original steps requires some care.

An extraordinary place. You have to have a guided tour. Climbing up and down into the tower is a bit of a squeeze.
It is remote and near a small town with limited facilities. Make sure you have enough water food and petrol.

Since my hubby's thesis was about 'nuraghi- miniatures', Barumini was a place we could not skip during our visit of Southern- Sardegna. (Nuraghi are big, megalithe tower-like buildings ,18-15th century BC, the miniatures are small replica's from 9/8th century BC)

First of all: by all means, get a car! Visiting Barumini by public transportation is nothing short of a military operation doomed to fail....(especially offseason)

Of course there was the settlement of Su Nuraxi, a grand Nuraghe- complex which makes you feel small, considering they built this 3500 years ago (but how?) Part of the tour was in English, but it helps understanding the structure if you read up on it before visiting (when you're interested: don't hesitate to ask me what to read. Also: visit the website of Su Nuraxi excavations. It's also available in English and helps you understand the structure).

At the site you can buy a combination- ticket: please do!

With this ticket you can visit the Lilliu Centre (about 200 mtr. from Su Nuraxi, opposite, Lilliu was one of the most famous archaeologists of Sardinia). They have an exposition on Maritime Archaeology, excavations in the surrounding area and... the Nuraghi- miniatures!

Drive even further into town and again with the same ticket you can visit Casa Zapata, a museum about the history of Barumini. This 16th century palace was, as excavations during restauration have discovered, built on another Nuraghe (Nurax e' Cresia),which now can be see onderneath the floors of the palace. The museum also shows the history of the Zapata family and part of the museum shows etnographical objects and typical Sardinian musical instruments.

Bordering Barumini there's the small town of Villanovafranca, where there's another great Nuraghe: Su Mulinu with this great roman Altar which partly looks like... a miniature nuraghe! Villanovafranca also has an archaeological museum.

If you still haven't seen enough: visit Villanovaforru, with the Nuraghe Genna Maria and archaeological museum.

If you have just planned a trip from Cagliari or from another town to Barumini, to the most famous Nuraghe of Sardinia, please change your trip plan and add at least other three or four hours. In fact there are two other wonderful sites to visit: The Old Casa Zapata,in which there are wonderful ruins of another Nuraghe construction, plus many ancient objects, a small folklore museum and a Launedds one, related to one of the most ancient music instrument in the world. If you have ot enough time, please visit the newest Centro di servizi Culturali "Giovanni Lilliu", named after he discoverer of the ancient Nuraghe of Barumini. It is a Cultural Centre with shops, exhibitions and a small pub and services.
