Magnificent massif, easy walks. Multiple and variable colors depending on the time and travel, shimmering ochres. Magnificent panoramic views. And the sublime Mediterranean Sea. Few people during this week in February. The +: Ideal for a sandwich break. Happy Chauvin.

Esterel lointain offers several hikes between the sea and the cliffs: "le chemin des douaniers" at Saint aygulf and "le sentier du litoral" which begins at the port of Santa Lucia in Saint Raphaël and ends at le "débarquement beach", some 4 km intermediate level. You can discover, along the way, beautiful coves where to swim in peace. sun block is required, good anti slip shoes, water and a towel and your camera of course, the shots are exceptional thanks to the red rocks color of the region. To go back, you can take the bus, it runs every hour, if too tired.

I've been visiting this region for a number of years and have covered most of the trails in different seasons. Best time to visit is May/June when it's not too hot mid-day and the blue skies bring out the colours of the red rocks and wild plants clinging to the edge of the trails. The glistening sea looks very welcoming from a height and makes for a refreshing swim after a cycle/hike in the hills.
Best thing to do is find your own routes and maps can be purchased at tourist info centre by Agay beach.
Some of my recommended routes:
- the walking trail from Agay beach up to the French flag on the top of the Rastel meanders past houses on the hill then opens up into a lose stone track (careful descending) and then clambering over rocks to reach the peak. Excellent views across the coast. Allow about 1hr10 round trip (40 min to the top)
- Rocher de Saint Barthélemy is another route offering excellent views along the coast (if you're willing to climb the rock face where foot holes have been dug into the surface). On a clear day you can see from Cannes to St Maxime and beyond. The climb is not for those afraid of heights! Take the Rue de Gratadis off the Av des Golfs and head past the lake and up the road. It is possible to drive to within a 10-15 minute walk of the rock.
- Mont Vinaigre. The tallest peak in the Esterel can be reached by combination of car and walk. But most rewarding is if you go by bike. Take Chemin de la Louve off the Av des Golfs and keep cycling up going via Forestier house. It's all worth it for the views at the top of the brief climb on the rock. Take it easy on the excellent descent for some tight corners and watch for pot holes and cars! Depending on cycling ability allow 1-2 hours round trip
- Le Dramont. Not sure if it's part of the Massif de l'Esterel but it's still worth a stroll. Park near Plage du Débarquement and go from there!

This is a fabulous area around the back of Cannes and way beyond. There are many entry areas to the Parc. From Frejus we drove the DN7 then turned off of the D6007 at a small sign for the L'Estere just short of Mandelieu la Napoule. We parked up and walked into the park without prior consulting maps! We were lucky we followed our noses through the park to a sign that said Roc Rouge. This eventually led us to the Port De La Rague where we had lunch. We worked our way back to where we had started. Walk time about three and a half hours. Distance there and back about 15 kilometres
A lovely walk, probably best to map it out prior to the walk.

The l'Esterel is perhaps the jewel in the busy Côte d'Azur. Over the last 30 years ( I have visited yearly since 1982) the gradual return of this area to a more natural state has been heartening. This is home to a fauna which is extremely beautiful. Cork oaks Umbrella pines beech trees and mimosas.
Take some time to visit.

One of our favourite parts of Provence. Rugged, dramatic coastline backed by the Esterel mountains with many little coves and secluded beaches that are nowhere near as crowded in high season as the more well known places. From Le Dramont in the West, with L'Isle D'Or sitting juts offshore, to Theoule-Sur-Mer in the East on the edge of Cannes bay, this is a lovely area to explore.

2nd time around in Saint-Raphael. Both the coastal road to Nice (east from Saint-Raphael) as the coastal road to Saint-Tropez (west) are beautiful. Enough places to stop for a view, a drink, a meal (or the combination)

The Massif de l'Esterel offers opportunities for some serious hiking over rugged and at times steep terrain. Going up to 450 m above sea-level, there are fantastic views of the mountain ridges extending into the sea. At times challenging with the summer temperature and the distances, the longer hikes do take you to magnificent places from where the entire coastline can be seen for dozens of kilometers in either direction. Signage is generally ok but the public display maps could be improved.

Definitely get out their by land or sea and enjoy! The coast of the Mediterranean is sometimes cluttered by standard modern buildings but here you can still enjoy the wonders of nature

The Esterel Mountain range isn't nearly as well-known as the beaches here in the French Riviera.
However, they are stunning in beauty as their volcanic red rocks and jagged peaks contrast with the dark greens of their cork oaks and the blue of the Mediterranean in the distance.
They are absolutely worth a visit by car, on foot or even by bike. My favorite way to enjoy the Esterel is on foot, on a cool day.
When hiking the Esterel, make sure you go equipped with comfortable & sturdy hiking shoes, lots of water (no watering spots available inside) and leave early enough not to be caught after sunset far out on a trail. Also, avoid the heat of mid-summer month as it gets hot quickly when you climb, but also due to potential fire risks during the dry season (check for this online).
If you're keen on a long hike, it's best to go with a hiking guide and map to the region as the trails are not that obvious to find.
Ask me on TripAdvisor (azuralive) if you're keen on hiking here, as I've hiked the Esterel inside out.

Bonjour .

Written 26 May 2018
Io consiglierei la costiera .però è molto bella anche la strada interna .un Po tortuosa tutto bosco di sughero .

We will be in the area for 5 days. Which are the best 3 drives east or west of Nice? Is the Grand Corniche better going east to west or the reverse? What would be the best route to experience all 3 corniches?
Unfortunately, the Grand Prix will be on so we will avoid Monaco. Will the corniches be very busy or will tourists be watching the race?
After 3 nights in Nice, which town to the east would you recommend for a 2 night stay?

BJB,
Sorry not an expert but the D559 is the coastal road, she is narrow, windy, one lane each way and I did it east to west but reverse would be better I think ? Easier to pull up at good points ? If the GP is on maybe head up into the Alps to Le Broc and bypass Monaco ? For the next 2 days depends on how far you intend but San Remo would be another good base ?
Happy Trails, Skeney.

Bonjour,

Merci 😉
