Fab place to visit, you get a lot to see for what you pay.
Bring a packed lunch and eat it in the sun on a bench on the ramparts with the stunning sea views!
Fascinating history, well explained, and the 2 museums are really fab too! Allow time, if you want to see all of what this place offers, at your leisure.

We made an unplanned visit to the Citadel today, as we were in Port Louis in the wind and rain. What a great find, an amazing architectural structure, renovated to an exceptional standard, but still retaining the atmosphere of a historic military base. The audio guide was available in English and very informative. The three museums were great added value, the main information boards also had English translations. The Life Boat exhibition was particularly interesting for any seafarers. Lots of interesting dark, damp creepy corners for youngsters to explore. Brilliant value at €8 per adult.

The citadel in Port-Louis is a really nice place to visit, the fortifications are mostly in good repairs overlooking the sea with a nice panoramic view. It also host 3 fine museums
The lifeguard museum
The naval archeology museum
The East India company museum

All three are really nice, very well done and very informative especially the third one.
A nice place to visit for an afternoon

The building itself is magnificent, and the museum dedicated to the Companie des Indes Orientales is very interesting, with lots of very well presented artefacts and lots of explanations.

The place is very well maintained and seem unchanged despite the years. You can visit exhibitions and most importantly walk on the defense walls overlooking the sea.

As the entrance, a very impolite and disorganized lady was in charge of the cashier. I still wonder why such an unwelcoming lady is in charge?

For France the entrance seemed quite dear, but it was well worth it. The trip includes two museums. It took us a while to notice, but the audio guide numbers are on the cabinets in the Trading Companies museum. All very interesting.

This is a great visit, particularly for us with a young family, and a nice way to spend a few hours. We got there early and entered the Citadelle. The fortress is wonderful with amazing views over the harbour, Lorient, and the sea. Typical of French tourist sites, there are no actual catering facilities (I can never understand this; surely they're a great draw and money-spinner?), just a vending machine with snacks and horrible coffee. The Musee de la Compagnie des Indes is beautifully done, but I felt could be more interactive (compared to other museums we had visited). The lifeboat museum was very good although I wasn't quite sure (with my basic French) what the flow was here - is there one? We were then perfectly located to head onto the lovely beach (not that soft sand, quite gritty FYI), and enjoyed lunch at the bar/restaurant Casino. This was the priciest place we ate at, particularly given the standard of food, but is in a great location. There's also a children's playground, ice cream van (shut at the most inopportune moments, typical of the area) and small fairground rides at the car park. There also seemed to be a small train you can ride on but we didn't have a go. It was a great little place overall though, with all facilities close by.

If you want to see a view of Port Louis this is a go place to go, not to much there, there is a few local tourists shops inside. Besides the view there’s not much more to see

It was 2 hours nice walk in the city. It is nice and cozy small historic town. Interesting mixture of architecture nice old church and interesting fort. When you are around Lorient, pay a visit (and skip Lorient).
