Wasn't expecting too much from this but genuinely it was well worth the visit with an entry fee of around €6.

Whilst the Abbey has lots to see, including various saints whose 'bits' are on display near the alter, it also has a number of exhibitions in rooms around the quad. Wasn't much interested by the comic display but the artifact display and open air theatre at the rear were good especially as the latter had a number of shady benches.

Plan for around an hour.

This abbey dates back to the 8th century. We were surprised of how beautiful the inside is, but after discovering about the nearby marble quarries, it all made sense. This site is definitely worth a visit

The people on the information desk were charming and helpful. The leaflet to guide you round is informative without being too wordy.
The lady in the shop guided us to a local cafe - which we would not have found on our own and a cool drink was much needed. Highly recommend the bakery in the town - just up on the road above the car park too.

The little town of Caunes-Minervois is a centre for wine and a pink marble, at the heart of which is the ancient Abbey, which above ground dates from the 11th century, but below ground there are 8th century remains.

To liven things up, the Abbey has an exhibition of work 'Icons' by Charles Sahuguet and a fun exhibition spilling out into the courtyard on the cartoon characters Johan et Pirlouit. A great initiative to combine art and history of different periods, but with subtle interlinks.

The reception area will set you up with the walk through of the abbey and you will marvel at the vestiges of the 8th and 12th Century structures. The cloister is impressive. This is all beautifully maintained and peaceful.

A well kept Abbey to be sure but lacking some of the charm of many other historical buildings in the Minervois.

Again, this is another view not to be missed. Roads are good and the views are stunning. We found taking a picnic with us really helped as late December many places are closed. Only fair for people to have Christmas off!

The Caunes Abbey is perhaps hot the most impressive but it is authentic and has recently undergone some traditional renovations. It is a bit off the normal tourist routes so almost never crowded and sometime you will have the place too yourselves. It usually has an exhibit in the abbey rooms - sometimes for kids, sometimes giving the history of the local marble quarries, sometimes art. The people in the office and shop are very helpful and the roman floors in the lower level are very unique. Definitely worth a visit.

We spent about an hour, touring the abbeys. We were lucky that the current art exhibit was Spirou, so the kids enjoyed that!

An interesting abbey but not that much to see. The church is beautiful on the inside. The grounds on the outside is not very well maintained.
