At the Yici bus station in Kaiping, you can drop your bags off for the day (4rmb), take Bus 13 (5rmb, 40min) right adjacent to the station out to the majianglou diaolou cluster (rmb 50). You'll have to walk in a little from the main road where the drop you off. Be sure to pick up something for lunch beforehand. You can find food served at some of the homes but the prices were double what you pay in kaiping. The bus passes by Chikan ancient street so you could make a day of going there first before the diaolou. Majianglong is very pretty with marked walking paths through bamboo groves, single story village homes, and the taller diaolous. (Be sure to bring mosquito repellant as the mosquitoes due to the thick vegetation will eat you alive!) There are two diaolous that were open to the public. The views from the top of these dialous were quite beautiful. Although the diaolous are not as impressive as the ones in Zili village, I felt that the whole area was more pleasant and less touristed. While it does not have exhibitions to tell you what you are looking at (like zili village),it was still very interesting to see glimpses into the villagers lives. After our trip we returned to the yici bus station to retrieve our bags and walked about 5 minutes south down Liangyuan to find a cheap hotel (98rmb).

This small cluster of dialou is a bit off the main circuit, so you will need to have your own transport to get here. The upside, though, is a welcome break from tour groups.

There are some fruit orchards and gardens in the spaces between each diaolou, and makes for a pleasant walk. Allow yourself about 2 hours to wander around and explore.

I visited 2 of the diaolou villages: Majianglong and Zilicun. To me, the latter is nicer and more iconic. However, this one has its own charms as well. There are fewer dialous and they are not as dramatic. It is far quieter and makes for a nice leisurely walk around.

The two diaoulous that we were allowed inside were very well presented. overall groundskeeping also well kept including bathrooms. nice signage tour post throughout. Website isn't very english friendly nor will Tripadvisor allow me to post. try googling KPtour or search wechat which is only in chinese.

Audio tour is good enough.

I came here because this village is where my mother grew up. I was quite astounded at how nice the houses were here compared to my father's village in Taishan. As I took a look at some of the villas that are for public touring I got a sense of the expanded wealth that some of the villagers had here compared to other local villages in this area.

In addition, the bamboo forests surrounding this village were quite breathtaking.

Home to a couple of diaolous, some of which are open to the public, and a small village, MaXiangLong makes for an enjoyable visit. Give yourself at least 1.5 to 2 hours to properly visit MaXiangLong. There are shaded pathways weaving through the bamboo groves and star fruit orchards of the village and connecting the various diaolous, making for a pleasant stroll.

Most of the village is empty, its inhabitants no longer living here. Also, since the village is a little further afield, it is free of tour groups. Most visitors either drive or hire a driver to get here so MaXiangLong lacks the chaos of ZiLi Village and Li Garden. We hired a minivan (¥300 for 7 hours) from the bus station to bring us to some of the further-flung sights in Kaiping.

We headed from Chikan to Maxianglong in a moto-taxi. The driver, knowing that we were foreigners raised the price a lot (30RMB) but we didn't fight him (he is a lame old folk that was sitting close by to the movie set in Chikan). He dropped us in the entrance (for the entrance feewe had to pay 50RMB to the police) and left. It was a little bit late, so they wouldn't rent us bikes to move around and we decided to walk. The place is really worth it. We could see the diaolous and even enter in one of them. When we finished it was a little bit chilly and we didn't know how to get back to Kaiping. We started walking towards the bus stop, but it didn't seem to go to Kaiping. We asked a girl and she helped us to get into a shared taxi that finally drove us back.

I like that place. Real village feeling, kind people and calm place. Take 1,5h and explore this place. However, the towers are all the same. For me: see 1, saw em all.

Highly recommended because of that great village feeling hidden in the Bambus Forest.

We visited three different diao lou sites in the area (including Zili and Li Garden), but this site has a real village feeling the other areas lacked. There were some good diao lou to visit here with excellent period furnishing. The area is more spread out than the others we visited, so you will need to do some walking to see it all, but the walk is nice with some bamboo forest along the way.
