Visiting is a complete waste of time - the chateau is completely inaccessible and the gardens have been wrecked with large areas of lawn dug up, flowers removed and paths ploughed up The renovation is the worst planned I have seen - with the entire site in a distressed condition. Given the size of the chateau and estate and the scale of renovation it would have been far better to phase the work to complete section by section allowing public access throughout to competed sections. This would have taken no longer and cost no more.

We were extremely fortunate to visit the park in a horse drawn carriage accompanied by the owner. We also chatted with his wife who spoke about her family and the history of the chateau.
Unfortunately, we decided to lunch in the small restaurant. The meal was served in jars!
We had to ask for the potatoes which came in another jar. We also asked for a knife.
Normally in a restaurant the meal is served on a plate with a knife and fork!! Cost 20€/person.
Finally, don't want to be cruel, but when the english translation of "déjeuner" is written on the menu as "breakfast" one is led to believe that the castle owner needs to check out the restaurant manager.

We decided to visit this chateau due to a review in our local deux serves magazine.
The place is very underrated and should be visited.
The atmosphere is very restful the staff are friendly and helpful.
Good couple of hours on a lovely day.
Needs promotion.

This Chateau is within just a few hundred yards of the village of Dampierre and it's complete with moat. We paid to visit both the mansion and the gardens, though you can choose to visit the gardens only. The mansion is accessible only by guided tours and they leave approximately 40 minutes apart, but get there early as ours had left without us even though we arrived 5 minutes before its anticipated start.
According to the tour guide, the inhabitants of the property were imprisoned during the French Revolution, but these aristocrats were revered by the townspeople who took great pains to preserve the home and its belongings until the mansion's residents were released by the revolutionaries and allowed to return home. It's a happy story.
Make sure you see the intricate, old chapel that's predominantly carved in wood and very small and private. It's on the second floor behind a mirrored wall from which an inconspicuous door opens. (You'd never know it was there if someone didn't show you.) Elsewhere on the second floor is a regal ballroom that's not to be missed. On the first floor is a mirrored dining room facing the lake that caught me by complete surprise.
There are steps involved inside the mansion and strollers are not allowed there. The tour is given only in French (as of this writing), but the guide spoke very slowly so even with only a rudimentary understanding of the language I could roughly follow her explanations. Even without knowing all the details, I was really captivated by this mansion.
The gardens are designed around the lake next to the mansion and they were planned by the same talented fellow who designed the gardens at Versailles. To park, you can find a space on the village streets, or use the parking lot down the street and stroll through the lovely paths to the chateau. It's not far and well worth it. We recommend this one!

We checked the official website for opening hours. We arrived and the main gates were open. We walked in to be welcomed by a man telling us to get out. We then found a large notice at the gate pointing us to another entrance. En-route we checked with 2 locals to be told that the chateau was closed for renovation. We went back to the main gate a found an A4 note tucked away advising that it was closed for 2016. Later on a general tourist website we also found advice that it was closed for 2016. Obviously they couldn't be bothered to update their own Chateau website or main notice board

We toured the chateau gardens (not the interior) during the European Heritage weekend. The garden was a bit plain and the chateau itself was in a state of disrepair. There are a few water features (long canals) that were nice to walk around, but no formal gardens or pretty flowers. A closer look at the chateau and surrounding buildings shows you the huge cracks in the walls and sagging roofs. From afar the grounds and chateau are quite nice. I'm not sure it's worth the entry fee though.

Yes, of-course its the chateau that the punters come to look at. but we love this elegant village in its picturesque rural setting above the river Indre. It is certainly crowned by the massive medieval fortress. As we wheeled around a bend in the river,on the opposite side, we were gob-smacked by its fairy tale image.
As we ambled, winding up the hill past the Hotel de Ville to the chateau, the houses age considerably. The chateau dates from the 11th-16th centuries and has lovely choir stalls and a wonderful collection of painted wooden polychrome statues. Check out the chapel next door where a romantic and jolly vision of the Apocalypse is a pure whimsy and delightful.

It was wonderful several years ago, perhaps ten years ago, but now it isn't even possible to tour the grounds. As an alternative, visit the Chateau de Breteuil, perhaps 30 minutes away, but go with someone who can translate the excellent French tour guides.

We thought that for the price paid we can see the castle also, but it was closed. The gardens had nothing special to see.
In addition, the castle looks deplorable.
Certainly you can spend your money and time to go elsewhere.

The Castle needs a lot of TLC. The tour was only in French but I can speak a little and they gave me an English pamphlet. The family still lives inside in their own quarters. It is a little strange to see the family pull up in a regular car and park it out front. It takes away from the mystique and ambiance. I enjoyed seeing the art work and the furniture. The curtains are literally falling apart from the sun. The gardens are plain but nice. It is not at all busy so it was very, very peaceful and an serene afternoon.
