Although I say that Meteroa is impressive it does not include the town area. When below the towering rocks the area is oppressive, but that changes once you are up at the monestries themselves. The Grand monestry was not our favourite although it had an...More

Meteora is located in Kalampaka, around 355 kms away from Athens. It would take you approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes to reach the place from the capital by car. The word literally means "middle of the sky" or "suspended in the air" or "in...More

For me, it was the second trip to Meteora, after 18 years. For my husband and kid it was the first time. Definitely a place to see and even to come back in a lifetime

Stunning views of awesome rock formations, several very good photo opportunities with small spaces to park a car. Mind the touring cars. Can be a little tricky navigating a car through traffic of cars and people. St. Stefan and Varlaam monasteries to be recommended. James...More

We visited 3 of the monasteries while at the site. The Great Meteora was amazing!! I also recommend to walk from St. Vaartan's down to the lower viewing area. It is quite the trail and views. Take pictures along the spine between the several monasteries.

We were rather disappointed due to the loads of tourists..we expected it to be a monastery but it turned out to be a museum

The Meteora monasteries are a must visit attraction! Better to start the visit of the 6 monasteries early before all the buses. We chose 2 monasteries - the Megan Meteoro and the Varlaam, and drove the whole road connecting the monasteries with beautiful view points.

Extremely hot, but well worth it for the fantastic views and history. Just thinking about the labour and dedication required to build these unique monasteries is mind blowing.

For women dress code is a little stricter enforced, than for men, but for both goes: dress or trousers below the knees, shoulders should be covered. Spare scarves available to wear across upper body or as a skirt.

The train to kalambaka from thessonoliki is around 2 hours and very inexpensive. I enjoyed not having a car and riding the train. However I do think the roads are quite navigable if you really want to drive. Purchasing... More

There's several options: bus, taxi and walking. If you aren't short on time and like walking, I would definitely suggest that. Take lots of water and a few snacks. The views are much more tranquil and you'll enjoy it a lot... More
