Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

My few hours in this class started me on a whole new adventure in Japanese cooking. It wasn't just that Yumi showed us a few recipes. It was more that she conveyed some of the basic tenets of this cuisine and then followed it up by being remarkably available online when I have asked her questions while preparing dishes at home. Without that support, I would never have figured out how to use the various exotic ingredients I found at our local Asian food markets. She's become a wonderful resource and cooking friend. You really don't want to miss this opportunity.

Yumi took the time to explain clearly all the steps for simple Japanese cooking, and afterwards we ate together what we prepared. Very simple, easy to make back home. The location is very easy to find and also perfect for cookware shopping too!

Yumi and Maki were wonderful hosts, we (group of three) did the onigiri and tamago class and we really enjoyed learning about the ingredients and techniques. They made us feel confident enough to try it at home! A great way to spend a morning and have lunch in Asakusa. Yumi is also very accommodating and answered all of our emails and questions very fast. Thank you so much Yumi!

Yumi and Kei are the best hosts - we had so much fun making onigri and miso. She also gave us so much information on Japanese food and culture, and even gave us a taste of sake! Yumi even gave us her umbrellas to take as it was raining! Arigato gozaimasuta Yumi and Kei for a wonderful time! Will be back for other lessons!

My husband and I had a wonderful time learning how to make tonkatsu from Yumi. It was one of our absolute favorite experiences from our trip. Yumi taught us how to make miso soup, traditional tonkatsu, and a local tonkatsu which she said you typically can only get homemade as they don’t sell it in restaurants. We had so much yummy food and we definitely left with fully bellies.
I would highly recommend taking a class with Yumi and we will visit again next time we are in Tokyo!

I had a great experience learning to make takoyaki. It was fun, engaging, and delicious. I'd recommend this to anyone who is willing to get their hands a little dirty and is willing to try something different.
