Together with the volunteer guide I had been lucky enough to arrange for the first day of my holiday, we took a stroll down the Sugamo Jizo-dori Shopping Street. What a quaint delight. (Later in the same day we 'attempted' to walk down the equivalent street in Harajuku; a barely moving sea of people, which I do not recommend for... More

Took the Yamanote line to Sugano station for this first visit. Many shops around with value buys catering mainly for the middle aged. Wanted to eat at a restaurant offering fried oyster but the queue was very long. Instead ate at a sushi restaurant. Salmon sushi was very fresh and overall quite satisfied. Also tried some red bean pastry at... More

Also known as Grannies' Ginza, the pace of Jizo-dori is nice and slow. Shopkeepers are lovely and friendly and prices are good. Bought a big pack of mixed broken sembei for just over ¥300. Red underwear is good for health. The buddhist temple (Togenuki) along the way has a special statue. Rub the part of the statue that corresponds to... More

Lots of little shrines, temples, shops, bakeries, coffee stops and restaurants. It's a little dated-looking but that belies the charm and unbeatable atmosphere.

We were waiting for our turn for the Taitai ramen and walked around here. They have little eateries for breakfast and small shop. It's not super impressive but not bad to stroll around.

We are seniors so thoroughly enjoyed this area. We are large ladies so none of the clothes or red panties fit but it was so enjoyable walking around buying socks and bags. We also enjoyed a very pleasant time in the park listening to a gentleman singing traditional Japanese songs. There were five ladies with song books getting the crowd... More

Looking at senior citizens only in this area may lead you to believe that all seniors are very active and social! They especially look happy on days ending with 4 as 4th, 14th and 24th days of every month when special fairs are held to gather more people from all over Japan. There are unique souvenirs that you can only... More

Staying in Ikebukuro

Neighbourhood Profile
Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.
