Just go by subway and go visit the free museum. If you can get out of bed early you can catch a training practice. You can see the wrestlers walking around after their shower.
The museum is in the bottom of the stadium.

It's quite a way out and if you like sumo, then go for it!
The museum is pretty small, 1 room, lots of pictures and some pretty impressive scrolls over 200 years old.
Some explanations in English.
There's a rolling video showing some key fights.
There's also a small market place with a ring in an adjoining building.
Watch out for the mini statues along the main road as you approach.

It's one room with photos, handprints of the champions with calligraphy and some video. And that's it. There's nothing about the history of the sport (at least in English), how one qualifies to be a champion, no context at all. Skip it and go to a tournament instead if you can.

It's one room. Most of the material is written in Japanese. Not only is it unimpressive, considering the incredible boost in foreign visitors to sumo and the incredible interest from them you can and should do a lot better than this. Fix it. Don't ask your foreign commentators for input. Get an outside opinion. That this one room is your museum is embarrassing.

My girlfriend wanted to see the famous Sumo museum, so we made a special effort to go out to Sumida on our last day in Tokyo. Took us at LEAST an hour to find the place - not even the locals seem to know where this place is.
When we finally found it, we knew why nobody knew where it was - it is literally one room behind an unmarked door in a place you wouldn't normally expect something to be.
There is very little to say about this place except that it is a TOTAL waste of your time. Unless you are DEEP into sumo and then you probably already know almost all of what is in there already, don't even bother. Boring beyond belief, almost nothing in English (or any other language aside from Japanese) and the displays are old, dusty and raggedy.
My advice, go to the Edo Museum a block away instead. If you are at all interested in Japanese history, you will be glad you did.

Very disappointing, the place is undergoing renovation and is closed between Oct 01, 2019 until Jan 10, 2020.
Only the souvenir shop remains open but is hardly worth a visit...

Small place, very little to see and no photos allowed (why?). It was closed during weekends. Certainly not worthy of a special trip, but worth a quick look if you are in the area as it is free - we went to the wonderful Edo Tokyo museum and this place was only a 5 min walk away

You can learn more on Wikipedia and YouTube. Small room with a few old drawings and tournament rankings. Oh and the highlight, a TV playing some Sumo bouts. Little teaching about the sport or its history

This might be the smallest museum I've ever been to. Most of the explanations are in Japanese and you need to know a bit about Sumo traditions before going to the museum. They play some recent(ish) video of championship sumo matches on a TV in the one room museum.
Good to stop in if you're close, but probably not worth treking out to if that's the only thing you're interested in.
It is free and you can just walk right in no reservation or ticket required.
