If you are around Meguro Station or staying at the Miyako Hotel along Meguro Dori at the intersection of Sakakura Dori, this museum pairs well with a lovely stroll through the nature park next door at the Institute for Nature Study. There is a nice display of Japanese Cloisonné on display in February

The former residence of Prince Aska. Beautiful art deco architecture and interior decorations. Gardens are nice for a stroll. Museum cafe is recommended too. Check the exhibit schedule before going.

I wouldn't really describe this place as a art museum - the real attraction is the building itself. It's a beautiful example of art deco architecture and if you have any interest in architecture or Art Deco, you have to visit. The gallery space is housed in a separate, modern building and consisted of 2 installations when I visited. There... More

An Art Deco jewel with doors, chandeliers etc galore by Renee Lalique, exquisite marquetry but very average paintings. Also used as an art space with an interesting European exhibition of installations when we visited. Lovely cafe in the modern annex. Spend time in the gardens which have some interesting sculpture pieces.

This royal residence was restored in 2015, and is quite a beautiful place to visit. If you are a fan of Art Deco style, you cannot miss this place. The grounds surrounding the building are quite simple, and lots of folks were sitting on the lawn and enjoying the fall afternoon. Looks a great place for a picnic lunch (check... More

If you liked the "Golden Cabbage" of the Secession Museum in Vienna, you will be delighted with the former home of Prince Asaka, now the Teien Art Museum. A perfectly preserved Art Deco palace, the difference in Japanese and Western Art Deco is amazing. Sometimes Art Deco can be over the top in decorative elements. Here, the zen of Japanese... More

Its an excellently detailed art-deco building - everything from the woodwork to the grates to the ceiling tiles to the tapestry to the ... well, you get the picture. You can easily spend the best part of a couple of hours just noodling around the place!

The museum building used to be the residence of a prince. It's not a huge museum so the number of art pieces on display is not that many, but you can enjoy art with relaxed atmosphere. There is a nice cafe inside the museum with the view of the garden. The current exhibition is jewelries and paintings of Medici family.... More

Anyone who is a fan of art deco should not miss this. The museum itself is a work of art, with an eclectic rotation of exhibits. Its rather small but elegantly laid out. The garden however was mostly closed off without much explination as to why.

This small gem of a museum has one of the finest collections and displays anywhere of pristine Art Deco design. It was once a palace of a younger Royal and is set up as if you were walking through a large private home where everything was done in high end Deco. Lovely gardens. Easy to get to. Not expensive. Perfect... More

Staying in Shinagawa / Gotanda

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinagawa / Gotanda
In Shinagawa, an office district shares space with luxury residential buildings and the scene is constantly changing with rapid development. Ikedayama park and Togoshi park are great places to see beautiful traditional Japanese gardens with ponds, as well as enjoy the changing seasons. Shinagawa was a post and a port town during the Edo era and the lavish old Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples at Shinagawa and Ebara are very popular. It's a great place to get in touch with the old Edo atmosphere on a pleasure boat cruising along the canal. The neighboring area around Gotanda station is a study in modern contrasts filled with unique restaurants and a lively nightlife.
