Came and conquered

Let's be honest, 90% of the people who go to Akihabara are going for the sex shop. I came, I saw, I conquered.

It's a real assault on the senses - very noisy and full of neon but it's fascinating to see. Loads of Manga and Anime and an eight floor Sega arcade with some retro and some totally weird games.

This is the place to be if you love otaku culture, anime, manga, cosplay, gaming or electronics. I visited Akihabara on a Friday morning and most stores opened around 10.30am-11am. The area consists of multi-level stores selling anime figures, trading cards, manga and plushies amongst other merchandise. It was awesome to personally visit stores such as AmiAmi or Kotobukiya, which... More

The internet touts Akihabara as the best place to shop for anime and manga, and while there are a few stores there, it seemed to be dominated by store upon store of claw-games where you pay your yen and take your chances. There are tons of electronic stores where you can buy cameras or new toilet seats with the bidet... More

We went here just to visit the Gundam Cafe, a maid cafe and to see how the place looks like. In the end we backed out on the maid cafe experience and indulged in Don Quijote shopping instead =)

This is predominantly an area for all things electronic, gaming being particularly high profile. Maid cafes also seem to feature strongly, the concept I found a little weird - I guess it takes allsorts.

This was a fun world that is only available in Japan. From Anime to collectables to Manga and other hobbies, it's all here. From Anime porno theaters to what we came for.....the Owl no Mori (Forest of Owls) Cafe......really cool place.

Staying in Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda

Neighbourhood Profile
Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.
