We went to Lori Berd on a July afternoon. In our itinerary we had no choice, and so we came on a Monday, the less suitable day for the visit, because the castle is closed.
Yet - incredible to say - we were not disappointed, because we were still able to appreciate the grandeur of the walls of this ancient royal fortress (early 11th century), we could imagine the importance of this site; that apparently, in addition to the soldiers, housed perhaps 10,000 inhabitants, an enormous figure in relation to the time; and therefore rather than a fortress it was a fortified city. And above all we were able to experience the extraordinary position of the castle, on a wedge of flat land bordered by the two deep gorges of the Dzoraget at Tashir rivers, which come together right downstream of the castle.
Once again we have been able to appreciate the peculiarity of many Armenian valleys, which like this one are not merely a valley floor, but a plateau (we are over 1300 mts.) Furrowed by deep canyons in which the rivers that formed the valley itself flow: rivers invisible to those crossing the plateau, until they suddenly find themselves hanging on them, at the bottom of wild and repulsive ravines. A disturbing, but fascinating landscape!

It is interesting place and mandatory visiting area for tourists. Really nice castle, old, about 11 century and introduce Armeninan Lori's history.
There are some magnificent parys, where tou can sit on the top and enjoy, and think, and get energy.

Whilst in a state of decay as it had been overrun and sacked by Mongol invaders, and obviously because of its age, several buildings and the fortress walls are still intact even though it was built between 1005 and 1025.

The defensive walls and one tower are still standing and provide the tourist with a picture of what the complex was like all those centuries ago.

The remains of what was the bathing room is probably the most interesting as the clay pipes that carried the water to the bathhouse are still evident.

There is also a Civic House which you can enter - the purpose of it is still uncertain.

When you walk around the site and see that it is surrounded on three sides by deep gorges, it is a wonder how any invading army could have penetrated this fortress hundred of years ago.

However, the Lori Castle site is not the only example of this having occurred.

Certainly an interesting place to visit.

Lori berd is located in Lori province, 5km far from Stepanavan city, on the left bank of river Dzoraget. Though the major part of this medieval town is destroyed and ruins are in this place, however thousands of tourists visit this place every year. The stunning view towards a deep canyon s also very attractive.

This castle ruin is definitely worth a stop if you travel through this way. Nice area to walk around and look down at the river beneath.

There a so many ancient churches and monasteries in Armenia, and only a few castles, so if you want to have a little bit of different experience, you definitely come.

We stopped in Stepanavan on our journey from Tbilisi to Yerevan and decided to check this place out. It is an interesting site with ruins but I wouldn't make a special trip out of Yerevan for only this site. If you're around and want to see something different, give it a go. Need a car though.

Amazing location, great scenery but only accessible by car or with a 1 hour long walk from Stepanavan, if you arrive there by marsrutka.
The caslte itself has quite big extension, what you can see is the remained church, some remains of the nerby houses and more important parts of the water system, tubes and water houses.
Also the massive walls can be seen here, and you can access it and make a walk on the top.

The Lori fortress is located about 3 km from Stepanavan. You can take a taxi from the city, the ride will cost around 1000 AMD, not more. Entrance to the attraction is free. The fortress is located in a beautiful area, with mountains and canyons around. Breathtaking views.
