Yohualichan is an archaeological site with just a handful of ruins; five, to be exact. I've seen my share of ruins, both big and small. Generally, they fascinate me as I imagine people building them, and then I imagine the civilizations that lived among them. These particular rtins, though small, are neat because of their unique pattern and design, similar to El Tajín in Veracruz. They are very much alike, which is neat because there are no others like them!!

They are located outside of Cuetzalan about 20 minutes. You can take a taxi, or public transportation, which is much cheaper, but VERY bumpy!! That's how I got there, and I believe it was 10 pesos per person which is incredibly reasonable. This isn't the recommended option if you don't speak Spanish, as you'll likely need a little help.

These ruins are worth it, though small. They are very unique!!

Except for the fact that I bit by a million mosquitoes, the experience was amazing. We met a guy in Cuetzalan that took us there and didn't charge anything except for whatever tip we wanted to give him ($25) and he told us the whole story and gave us a little tour at the entrance explaining the plants that are there, the fruits and history on the coffee farms around.

The road is hard to get to but it is definitely worth it. We also ate at a restaurant nearby, very traditional frijoles con xocoyoli and loved it, the tortillas were hand made.

Excellent experience

We went with a guide to the site and really enjoyed seeing the site along with the near by village that was getting set up for a fiesta. The pyramids are a bit different that what I have seen at other sites in Mexico. This is not a large site, but is well maintained and worth the visit. You can get there by taxi from Cuetzalan.

You will find several pyramids of Totonac in this small and nice archaeological zone Yohualichan (Night House).
You can take a bus from Cuetzalan or drive to this small village.

In the middle of a green landscape you find the picturesque ruins of Yohualichan. It's built in the same style as El Tajin, but with much less tourists. It's just a small ride fromout Cuetzalan (take a taxi).

You can get through this fine sit in an hour. Take a cab or colectivo from Cuetzalan, about 30 minutes. There are ball courts, as well as some very well-preserved temples. All are well signed in Spanish, English and Nahuatl. If you cannot make it to El Tajin, this is the next-best thing!

If you're in Cuetzalan for a few days, take a combo out to Yohualichan. It's a nice archaeological site with some nice pyramids. The only bummer is you can't climb them. Oh well, it's still worth a visit

We visited in the rainy season of December. Even if it was rainy and somewhat cold it was a neat experience.

Mexico has the most amazing pyramids and this area of Cuetzalan is truly amazing. The city of Cuetzalan is also worth visiting, you will see a very traditional mexican town.
