Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

If the weather outside is not that nice, you can give it a try. I personally didn't like it: three floors of artworks, not really commented. You have to guess what that is and what it represents, because there's only the biography of the author and nothing more.

Firstly this gallery was a definite find! The exhibition in general was excellent especially the exhibit on the ground floor in memory of 9/11. Also the creative room downstairs where children are encouraged to build whatever they want with wooden bricks. The modern art collections on the upper floors were very interesting, well laid out etc. Our children also enjoyed... More

Apart from the paintings , take time to enjoy the works of Eusebio Sempere who is in many ways responsible for this wonderful museum's very existence. I believe the Alacant train station bears his name. Thanks to Tina at the front desk who provided me with a free booklet 'Ruta Sempere' which shows other memorable works found in Alicante City... The interior of the museum is very much suited for the modern art inside. 3 floors with contemporary paintings, sculptures and video. Free entrance as are all the museums in Alicante. Good for an hour or more if you are into modern art.

The permanent exhibition is nice enough and has a few large exhibition with artist from Alicante. We went to see the Magritte exhibition, we were very disapointed. The exhibition was ONE picture. To me this does not count as an exhibition...shame on you MACA. Good thing is that entrance is free.

The art gallery is right by our hotel. It's free to get in and had some really good pieces on display. Don't know why we haven't been before. Well worth a look.

This is a hidden gem. It doesn't look much from the outside but there is a lot to see inside and free entry. There are 4 floors with some good art and sculptures charting the history of modern art in Spain. There were quite a few young children there when we visited learning about art and then doing their own... More

The permanent collection is on the upper floors with special exhibitions on the ground floor, a little difficult to find as the sign on the wall is small, but a lovely gallery space to enjoy contemporary art.

Every Spanish city or large town seems to have an excellent contemporary art gallery, and this was also the case in Alicante. The gallery building is over several floors, all very spacious and well laid out. There is the right balance of enough art to stimulate without being overwhelming. The overall experience is subtly enhanced by the wonderful light in the... More
