Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

Very nice building with a historical front but inside with a contemporary structure. Contains about 400 pieces of contemporary art made by Spanish artist. Especially the 3 dimensional pieces are unique and nevet saw them in another museum.

Offline saved Google maps and the tourist map weren't the most useful, just checking now and it is in the right place...by the Basilica de Santa Maria d'Alacant an easy walk from the marina.

Opposite the Basilica of Santa Maria you find MASA a really nice museum owned by the City Council with FREE entrance. Beautiful galleries in 3 floors showing permanent and temporary exhibitions of spanish artists. A modern museum in an old building. Well done

My husband knows a lot more about art than I do, but we both enjoyed this gallery, which is free to enter, and you are given a short guidebook. The ground floor houses temporary exhibitions, while the upper floors hold the permanent collections - works on floors 1 & 2 being a donation by the artist Eusebio Sempere, and the... More

Sharp and modern museum, something different for Alicante. However only a few pieces of art caught my attention.

If you love contemporary art or any art style for that matter, is definitely worth a visit. The collection has some known and lesser known (to me) Spanish artists that worth finding more about. Beautiful space and accessible building. Friendly and helpful reception staff!
