This basilica with the statue of Virgin of Candelaria (a black one) is the reason why Candelaria is a pilgrimage capital of the Canary Islands. However, I liked the view of the basilica from the outside more than its interior. The windswept statues of 9 menceyatos beautifully contribute to the atmosphere. Btw, actually there only were 8 of them. The... More

Little town of Candelaria is located around 15 km south from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Capitol of Tenerife off TF-1 motorway. Basilica staying at the end of shoping street. Building itself seems to be quite big but interior give opposite feelings. On the square in front of basilica you can find few statues of former chieftans of Gaucho - people... More

Home of the Black Madonna makes this church stand out from the norm. The square outside often is used for fiestas and is a very pleasant place to relax

Candelaria is a nice village for a short visit. There is nothing much to see and I can't say that the basilica alone is worth the road there. Make sure to wander around the city a bit more, see the cave (just try to hold you breath when going to the far corners) and read about the place. Recommended if... More

We visited with family and friends. Its the first time I have seen a Black virgin Mary. If you walk along the roadway along side beach side there is also a grotto with a similar image but not so ornate, but worth a few minutes walk to compare and contrast.

This large domed Basilica dates from 1959 and sits at the edge of the town centre, overlooking a rocky beach and flanked by the Plaza de Patrona de Canarias where 9 huge statues of Guanche warriors stand guard. The setting is breathtaking!

Visited the church with my Husband. We took a leisurely walk along the sea-front into Candelaria ending up in the Plaza de Patron and the Basilica. Very pretty on the outside and we enjoyed the artwork inside the church which was unusual. Worth a visit if you are nearby.
