This is a nice place to come for a short time to take in the ocean views, and to relax. There is a brand-new midway here called the Malecon. This is a great place to take the kids and many schools have field trips here. There are some nice restaurants and kiosk here for fast food, beverages or ice cream. This place is patrolled by the military and police and is very safe! There are 2 piers that are being transformed to a shipping port. There is a large fish market that smells horrible but has plenty of fresh catches available. The are some really good market shopping places outside of this venue!

The malecon since my last trip in 2019, Puerto De La Libertad now in 2023 has undergone significant development. I've got to say that the seafood at the Mercado Del Mar was the freshest I've ever tasted, and I was amazed by the way the President built a brand-new building so that all the fisherman have a place to sell their catch in a clean environment. I also noticed that the Chinese government is constructing numerous buildings all throughout El Salvador, especially here. I believe they put millions in a project near the Malecon that is modernizing the country and I am incredibly proud of the advancements my small country has made. There are some really beautiful vistas here, and if you head toward the end of the old pier, you may still see fishermen and take some fantastic photos. I highly recommend the malecon for an authentic experience.

The Malecon was a great concept and is a brand-new project for the port area. It consists of a ferrs wheel, roller coaster and a merry go round. It is a great place to take children and creates a fun atmosphere The locals were really excited when this project was finished.

What used to be a basic fish market is now beautifully deliciously updated. It's going to be even better once the amusement park is completed.

Amazing fresh seafood for so cheap. Quite a few different places serving. We always come to buy seafood fo cook back at our AirBNB after we eat there. Area is clean and safe.

BTW, check out EastSky Villa for the most perfect beachfront AirBNB if you're travelling to the area. Only about 15 minutes from here

We were staying at a rancho, EastSky Villa in Playa Amatal and decided to go sightseeing and pick up fresh seafood. It's amazing how nice the Chinese government modernized this place. And the speed they did this!!! Was there in May and again in October and the progress was amazing. What used to look like 3rd world country working pier is now a beautiful area the country can be proud of and tourists should stop by. Plenty of places to get a good meal or cold drink.

Malecon impassable to the west due to construction. Early mornings show lots of fishing boat launches and preparing fish for drying.

Nice long pier with lots of fresh seafood for sale as well as restaurants all over the place. Fish mongers will cut your fish for you and others will cook what you bought if that’s what you want. Early morning is when the fresh catch comes in and locals haggle over the price. A warning about the traffic. If you are coming in to town during the weekend or at peak hours be prepared for a long wait in traffic!

Walk by this pier where fishermen since early morning come out with a huge diversity of fish and sea animals (manta rays, bass, cod, crabs, etc.), plus people trading, pelicans watching, and surfers doing their stuff in a beautiful unspoiled area!

Long strip of fishing vendors with all sorts of catch of the days. Small tables of souvenirs but it’s all about what’s caught fresh
