Magnificent rock formations! We went to the top by quite steep stairs. The walk is not very easy, but it is also not too difficult. You just have to take some time. We had a lovely sunny day and the views were amazing.

Fabulous scenery from the fortress, with walls still in tact. The rock formations were the highlight, but a also a neat little village.

Wonderful. The hike to the top does require some fortitude, but the view and the formations are amazing and I am glad I ventured to the top.

entrance fee is 6 BGN. best visited in the evening so that the sun is shining directly onto the entrance /rocks. but during summer time, the fortress closes at 6 pm, so that is still at least 3h away from sunset.

you will need 1.5-2h for this visit as there are some stairs to climb up and down and panoramic view to partake

Belogradchik Fortress is 1 hour drive from Baba Vida Fortress, and 2.5 hours from Sofia. Road quality is ok on some parts and on some not. A couple of road signs are along the way, so generally speaking easy to find.
Entrance is 6 BGN (3 EUR) per person.
Parking is paid 2.4 BGN (1.2 EUR) for 1 hour.
You need to be fit if you want to get to the top. First you have to climb 124 steps, and then some 66 steps more to the top. But the view from the top is AMAZING.
It is worth the Visit!

The fortress and the rocks are definitely worth a visit but their history and background are very poorly presented. There is a lot of history here but it is related very sparsely to the point of annoyance. You are left "screaming" for more information.

The site is located in a very built up area and parking is a nightmare and coaches everywhere.

Our Multi Travel Bulgaria tours first stop from Sofia was to the spectacular Belogradchik Fortress. The approach gives off real Game of Thrones/Lord of the Rings vibes, with its turrets and gate leading to the impressive rock formations within the castle.

Within the castle some of the climbs could be a little hard if you aren't fully mobile, but are certainly worth the effort. If you get some good weather like we did in late May it certainly adds to the visit as you can see into both Serbia and Romania.

A word of warning as our guide said to make sure we had our passports with us as border patrol often stop people around this area.

The entry fee is under £3.00 which in itself is just insane. It is three hours from Sofia but well worth the trip if staying for more than a couple of nights

The fortress is essentially the entrance to the red rocks. The fortress itself is OK, it is the rocks around it that make it grand. It is beautiful scenery and definitely a unique location for a fortress.

Fantastic rocks shape the fortress built by Ottoman conquerors. NOT an easy hike/climb, but worth it. the views from the top are gorgeous.

This fortress dates back to the Roman reign about twenty centuries ago. The fortress is set in a beautiful rocky outcropping in the Balkan Mountains which has many "animal" figures as part of its natural makeup, along with the "first kiss" of the couple who was changed to stone because of their indiscretion. The superstitions abound! The backdrop of the fortress with the height and rocky terrain is gorgeous. While we were there (April 19, 2022) we were caught in a freak snowstorm, which made it a bit more unforgettable!
