An hour outside Tokyo by train, Mt. Takao is popular among city dwellers for the views from its seven hiking trails. To enjoy the view without the work, take the cable car or chairlift to the top and visit the Takaosan Yakuoin Yuuki-ji Temple, founded in 744.

I loved my day trip here, a nice mountain only an hour from Tokyo. The people at the information desk, although they had limited English, were much obliging to help with my inquiries. I took Trail 6, which is supposed to be the most scenic....More

See my full review & photos of takaosan at my taverl/dining blog=http://chefquak.wordpress.com/2013/04/25/takaosan-trails-senbonzakura-1000-sakuras/ Takaosan (高尾山) is the ideal destination for easy, fun trekking. The summit is just 599m and on a clear day we can see Mount Fuji & have excellent view of Tokyo’s cityscape. It...More

At 599 meters, or just under 2,000 feet, Mount Takao - Takaozan in Japanese - isn't an especially high mountain. However, with over half a dozen trails leading to the top, in addition to a cable car and chair lift that goes about halfway to...More

A nice mountain with great views on top. There are many little temples on your hike up. There might be a lot of people but that doesn't ruin it because you're still in nature. After your visit here, try going to Ukai Toriyama.

The colors of the red and orange leaves were spectacularly vibrant! My friend and I had loads of fun goofing around with the leaves (we're originally from a place with no Autumn season). We hiked rather than took the cable car but further up the...More

It was a clear sunny but crisp autumn day and Mt Takao beckoned. The autumn colours were in full swing and we started out from Takaosanguchi Station. We hadn't reckoned on it being a festival day and also being a Sunday it was very crowded....More

We visited Mount Takao, as I needed a break from the city. You can easily do Takao itself as a day trip from Tokyo. It's about an hour on the private train line from Shinjuku station. We wanted to see Mount Fuji, but when we...More
