We visited this museum because entry to it came with entry to the Castle museum, so we thought we'd get our money's worth.
I do speak some Japanese but my husband doesn't, and we both found this quite entertaining and interesting. The use of pictures and animations really helps in bringing across the stories in a way that doesn't need you to properly understand Japanese. The interactive nature of touching the figures to start the animations was fun.
We spent about 30 minutes here, but you could spend a good hour or so if you wanted to listen to all the tales. There's also a library of books (both big text filled ones and smaller picture books) for you to explore.

It's well done, such a nice area with interaction and great for the kids. English is limited, which is understandable - but the interaction with the different things in the house made it fun anyway. I ended up watching a couple of movies, listening to stories and not understanding but was facinated by how nicely it was put together.
Made me want to pick up a Japaneese book and struggle though the language.

This museum has a great interactive folk tale section where you can touch little figurines and see a shadow-play while you hear the relevant tale among many other funny and innovative ways of presenting the tales. There is however extremely limited information available in English. The other half of the museum is devoted to Yanagita Kunio, the folklorist whom put Tono on the map when he published the Legends of Tono in 1910. It is located in the building that used to be the top inn in Tono a century back and in which Yanagita always stayed when in Tono. Once again there is less information in English than in Japanese, but here at least there is enough available in English that it is still interesting and informative for English speakers. The building itself is worth a look too if you're interested in Japanese arcitecture. The last exhibition building, also on Yanagita, is Yanagita's home which was moved from Tokyo after his death.
