Lendava Castle stems from the 12th century and was a property of Hungarian noble families.
The present appearance of the castle is Baroque dates from 1690–1707, following the withdrawal of the Turks from the area, when the Esterházys had it rebuilt to form an L-shaped building as a sign of their loyalty to the Emperor Leopold I.
The castle now contains a museum and a gallery. The Lendava-Lendva Gallery and Museum was established in 1972 by the Municipality of Lendava-Lendva. Its versatile archaeological, ethnological, numismatic, and visual arts collections are displayed in the castle and are mostly prepared with Hungarian partner institutions.
Till 31 October 2018 the Lendava Castle presents ‘’Creation and the Bible’’ an amazing exhibition of Marc Chagall’s works.

This was my second visit. This visit had a special Salvador Dali exhibit. Very interesting. Even without the special exhibits, the castle is worthwhile visiting.

I went there with kids - my boy loved the artillery department and my girl loved the butterflies, so it was an OK experience. But if you skip it, you don't miss much.

A beautiful medioeval castle , in raised position easily reachable from the town, spending 15 min walking. Very interesting the exhibition of paintings painted by local artists , the weapons and flags , the collection of butterflies and insects , clothes and fabris with households items. The attic with a large number of sculptures , to look also the interesting wooden structure that supports the roof. One weak point , the missing of English traslation either for the castle history ( it had to be very interesting) or of all many artists/others descriptions , all written in Slovenian and Hungarian language.

We visited shortly before closing time so did not see all parts of the museum. However, the permanent small bronze sculpture exhibition in the attic alone is worth a visit. These works have been created by Central European artists during the International Fine Arts Colony held every year in Lendava. Many of the sculptures are whimsical, and the exhibition space directly under the roof is amazing.

Old castle with interesting view is not far from the central part of Lendava. They can arrange better walkway from the church to the top of the hill and better connections to collections in the medieval part of the city. Main goal is castle itself. You can look at some permanent collections (handicrafts, sculptor from Lendava) and a huge collection of small sculpture in the attic. Best parts of the castle are temporary exhibitions. They had special presentations of prints: Rembrandt, Picasso, and Japanese Shunga. Now, you can go and look at works of Miro. Don’t hesitate and go there.
