Chiesa Madre San Giorgio dates back to 18c and serves as the main Locorotondo Church. It's set on a small square within the old town tiny alleys.
Likewise many towns in Italy a modest and simple Baroque facade hides terrific interiors with great marble art, two side altars and beautiful dome.

Definitely more impressive on the inside than the outside. A large church with a main altar, and two large side altars. Several places have glass panels set in the floor where you can see the more ancient walls and foundations on which this church has been built. Beautiful ceilings & artwork.

Beautiful understated interior and ceiling, a relief from the OTT baroque churches we'd recently visited.shame to see the water damage to the corner of the roof.

The church, dedicated to St. George the Martyr, was built between 1790 and 1825 on the site of previous churches.
The construction is based on cross plan with neoclassical influences, as well as the implementation of Renaissance and Baroque parts of previous churches..
Admission is free, although a (small) donation will always be appreciated.

This was one of the stops on our walking tour and our guide gave us a lot of information about the historical significance of many things inside and out!

This is a beautiful church, truly in the style of the rest of the city: ultraclean, well kept with well chosen decoration that has no need to be valuable. Even the side altars are extremely well taken care of.

This is the large church of Locorotondo. It is truly magnificent and ancient with the tremendously high ceilings and domes, several alters and crypt under the Church. Everyone should visit this magnificent holy place. People were saved from the plague and no one died and then they built 13 churches and chapels in gratitude to God.

A very quite church full of light and beautiful stone work. There are "glass windows" in the floor that let you see the sight of old foundations of the previous church. The church is dedicated to San Giorgio, the patron saint of the city.

The old town of Locorotondo is truly delightful with it’s beautiful small alleys, old buildings & squares. We took a minute to peep inside this old church with its very elaborate interior decor. Like many of the Puglia church interiors they have a very heavy feel with the coloured marble, intricate gold, silver, glass detail, dark wooden pews. Glancing up at the structure of the ceiling is often rewarding, the detail a bit less heavy & fussy....prettier somehow.
