About
Often less crowded than other attractions, Klis Fortress sits perched on a cliff top, offering breathtaking views of Split and the surrounding mountains. You can learn about the history of the various inhabitants through the centuries, admire the traditional clothing and weapons, and even try your hand at archery. Fans of the hit show Game of Thrones will recognize the fortress as one of the filming locations. Hop on a sightseeing bus that stops here on its tour, or take a 20-minute drive from Split. Your ticket also includes entry to the nearby Olive Museum. – Tripadvisor

Great fortress to wander around for a few hours.
Caught the 22 bus to the fortress for €1.25 (zone 2) . A nice fortress to wander around for an hour or 2.€10 admission. Walked down the steps and had a coffee at a lovely cafe across the road before catching the 22 bus to solin to see the ruins.

Nice fortress but shame about the NEW buildings.
Visited this fortress today and was really nice, bus 22 from town center is only €1.25 to right outside the fortress. Loved the history of the fortress and that it was undefeated and the history behind it. But what let's it down is that they have started to repair and modernise it, the two new restored buildings look brand new and not fitting with it's surroundings, also other parts have been restored and has lost is authentic look in places. But definitely worth a visit and the views are amazing.

    Fantastic view!
Fantastic view! A lot of wind so high up, so hang on tight to your summer hat. Inside the fortress you can't reach everything with a stroller, but walking up to the first gate with a stroller is relatively easy. View from that point is fantastic too. No restaurants up there but there is a toilet in artillery barracks. There are safety rails in difficult places, so if you are fairly agile, you can access all parts of the fortress.

A lovely castle with amazing views.
In looking at how to get there, it seemed hard to get there by buses and expensive by taxi. Thankfully we had a hire car so we went to Klis fortress on our way out of Split on our journey to Plitvice lakes. The trip up the hill and the turn of to the road to get to the castle was easy to follow, but the turn off to car park wasn't signed really well so we drove past it and had to do a U-turn to get back to it. It was free to park in and not busy so we got a spot easily. We were there early as well. There is a short walk up a paved path to the castle entrance. We had to wit about 15 minutes after the opening time as the ticket office lady was late getting to work there. The cost was 10 euro each, which was a little more than it was worth but still not outrageous. The view back down to Split while waiting was excellent. There was toilets in the barracks building so that was handy. Once we got in, it was a multi level with tracks and stairs leading to various areas. There wasn't to much to see but it was an excellent fortress with amazing history and stunning views back down to Split. Well worth the trip out if you have a hire car.

    Great old ruins
Great old ruin high up on a hill. Ticket overprized though, 10 euros.. However, worth the visit. We spent maybe 1,5 hrs to see everything and still I wonder if we missed something.

Wonderful and very well preserved fortress
Klis Fortress is located in the little town called Klis, near one of the main cities in Dalmatia Region: Split. It is a full complex very well preserved, where you can see some of the walls, towers and rooms of this Middle Ages Fortress. It is a wonderful place, where you really feel this period of time. Also, it is a very important place, because the origin of the Croatian country is here. You can walk around all fortress, learn about the history, visit a lot of rooms and a church and see very nice views of the surroundings. Very recommendable!

    Outside the city center
If you have time, I suggest you visit this fortress. Lots of history here. The fort is in remarkable shape. If you climb Oprah Tower, you can view all three defensive fortifications as well as sweeping views of the city below. Try to visit on a clear day so you can see the city and since the climb is uphill you really don’t want to do this in the rain. A solid hour here would be sufficient.

    MUST FOR ALL GOT FANS
If you’re a GOT fan, this place should definitely be on your list. Though they just shot a part of season 5 here but the full castle shouts MHYSA. We didn’t take a guide or tour & it didn’t affect much. Due to the size of the castle, all of the locations are on the face. Almost all the locations are still the same except one, where they have made a stage and sitting stands but the rest of the castle is still fun. A MUST VISIT

    Astonishing view
Great place to explore. Really well preserved. Lots of levels and an astonishing view. It costs eur 10 per person to enter. By the entrance you receive a nice map with descriptions of the spots to visit on the tour. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful views of Split from Klis Fortress
Numerous locations in Croatia were heavily featured in the hit series, one such location was Klis Fortress. As well as playing a crucial role in Game Of Thrones as Meereen City, Klis Fortress played a crucial role in defending the territory of Split for centuries - most notably the 1532 Battle Of Klis, which is re-enacted every year in the last weekend of July. Klis Fortress is about 26 minutes from the port of Split and entry is Entry is €10 ‑ Adults; €3 ‑ Children (up to 15 years old).

These were amazing! You need an hour and a half to truly cover the fort. So interesting it really gives you perspective into the history and protection of the area. We Ubered and the cost was $27.

Amazing place if you like walking around in ruins. Great for history and Game of Thrones fans. The view overlooking Split was breathtaking, but be prepared for the hike up, bring water and a good pair of shoes.

The fortress is kind of run down with limited parking. We hiked up the hill to see it but decided not to pay the 10 euros per person since it appeared that the fortress was not in great shape.

Really interesting couple of hours.
Didn't pre book tickets, but paid and got entrance very quickly. Were given a leaflet in English which had a map and some bits of detail about lots of parts of the fortress.
A band playing was interesting and added something abit different.
Views were spectacular, learnt a decent amount and enjoyed the walk around in the sun.
Some of the exhibit areas could do with some improvement, the armory part was good, but the small room with a couple of game of thrones pictures could really be improved and im suprised its not something they've leaned into.

Great place for Game of Thrones lovers, but even for history enthusiasts this can be a fun stop. Expect a lot of walking and hills, but the views are amazing.

Slightly out of the main tourist routes, but served by public services, this fortress is very impressive. A short climb up a cobbled road is a large and extensive fortress. It was many centuries old with parts fully renovated in the last ten years.
Very good views over Split and the coast. But can be very WINDY.
A lot of scenes from “Game of Thrones” were filmed here and you can see why. A maze of paths, steps and buildings cover a large area on top of the mountain.
The defensive position is obvious, and history shows it was generally successful.
A good experience in a good state of repair

We enjoyed the fortress, but when we were there, there was no one to guide us through the history of it. We enjoyed recognizing some of the Game of Thrones filming spots, but wished there was more references to it.

It is open to explore all around - which was really cool.

Amazing history there - a true fortress that has seen a lot! If walls could talk!

We would definitely recommend this spot and also the Olive Oil museum (which came with our entrance purchase at the fortress).

It was easy to take a €15 Uber ride from our hotel to the fortress. We spent about 75 minutes exploring the fortress. I would be very careful for older people. The footing is not very easy. Some of the stones can be quite slippery. But it was an exceptional display of an ancient fortress. Some scenes from the show Game of Thrones were filmed here.

Being so high up on the hill, this provided spectacular views of the city of Split in the distance.

From the castle there is a beautiful view of Split and the surrounding area. On a clear day this is a must do for the area. There is not much inside and minimal displays but it is worth a visit. If you're going just for the views, it takes under an hour. If you're interested in reading the displays, an hour and a half is probably a good time estimate.
