The Wire of Death was initiated by the German occupation authorities of Belgium in 1915 during WOI. After the armistice in November 1918 this hated electric fence was immediately dismantled. It had kept Belgians and Dutch people separated in a cruel way, as anybody trespassing the 2000 volt wire was instantly electrocuted.

The site at Zondereigen (Baarle-Hertog) is a reconstruction made in 2008. It is at the original location on the border.

Many people in the border areas with Belgium know about this fence, as it was installed along the whole length of the border and hundreds of people lost their lives while trying to crossover. I learned about it by stories told by my grandmother, who also remembered vividly the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Belgians seeking refuge in the neutral Netherlands after the war broke out in 1914 (prior to the building of the fence).

I have to be honest...i did not know the story of the Dodendraad (Wire of Death) before my visit. In the city there are many spots along the Dpdendraadroute that explain the story.
A nice visit to remember a tragic page of history

This monument of the WW I in Belgium is very impressive and the path is well done by the schoolchildren. Horrible when you read what happened. They made an invisible hole you can go through to the Netherlands, you can fold it so the German didn’t see it, an awful time we don’t want to forget.

This small local site is quite interesting with its recreation of the Belgian-Dutch border fence in World War One. It is very well done and realistic. In a small gazebo is a series of explanatory panels to enhance the site. I understand it is done by a local historical group. Very well done!
