This is a must see place in Romania. The church, which is undergoing a huge transformation, is very interesting but the cemetery is the attraction. So unique and even without knowledge of Romanian, you can understand a bit of the lives of the people represented on these amazing grave markers. We spent quite a while looking at many of the... Very unique concept of a merry cemetery. Must visit. One serious disadvantage is that there's no signage in English..very naturally. Our home stay had a book with English translations for several epitaphs so it was easier for us to appreciate it even though we can't read and don't follow Romanian.

The Happy Cemetery consists of beautiful, brightly decorated tombstones of carved wood crosses. Each tombstone tells the story of the deceased person and the work they did. For instance a little girl who was struck by a car, the mother-in-law and a young man who died of illness too early. The cemetery also has a traditional Orthodyx church which is being... More

I did enjoy looking at the colourful tombs but I cannot understand the Romanian description on the tombs. I asked a local to explain one of the tombs and it was funny. I got to speak to a Hungarian lady in one of the souvenir stalls, and that was informative. I got to stand on the border of Romania-Ukraine a... More

This is a really nice place to see in Romania. It is unique on all over the world but it requires long drive and the roads are bad. Also the petrol and lpg prices are high there but you must refill your car before you leave since later it is hard to find a gas station for a few hours!

Gaudy and useless. It betrays the true spirit of the enchanting cemeteries of Maramures. more and more only a tourist attraction sideshow. Some nice stories, but only if you know the Romanian.

My first visit after many years at Sapanta. The cemetery is as beautiful as I remember it, the church is restaured. The only problem we had was with the girl that was cleaning the candle place. She took away the candles we just lighted, they were lighted like a minute earlier and she just took all the candles and thrown... More

We took a day trip here from Baia Mare. It is definitely worth to come here, Merry Cemetery is original! Never seen something like this place before. Note, all words on the crosses/tomb stones are in Romanian. We took a book about this Merry Cemetery with us with English translations. It helped us a lot and we could translate it... More

It is an unusual concept and very unique a must see. The wood carvings and painting are lovely and my friend translated one of the story (engraved on the headstone) was really funny !!! If you have someone who. An translate it for you is great.

An original Romanian monument. The messages on the crosses are pretty funny. Also, the staff at the entrance was kind enough and gave us two postcards instead of tickets.
