We left Pinhao's Vintage House Douro Hotel and stopped here. Not sure why since the lock process is painfully slow and not exciting. I've seen the entire length of the Panama Canal, and our ship went through at least one lock. Being inside the ship during the process is vastly different than observing a ship. The height and width of the river boats are limited by the height and width of the lock.
Jorge, our guide, knew the fruit vendor in the parking lot. He bought a 5L jug of tawny port from her for 5E in a generic bottle laced with white plastic for carrying. This is why we stopped here I think.

One of the five locks needing to be navigated on the criise on the Douro this is no more and noless impressive than any of the others though it is good the way the scenery opens out as the lock gates disappear and you resume your stately progress. Good viewing platform on this one.

One of the major dams in the Douro, this is located a 10 minute drive upstream from Peso de Régua, on the Pinhão road. There is a good parking area and you can walk along the top of the dam if you would like, and look down into the lock. There are good views of the river, of the vineyards and the various Quinta in the area, and of the bridges of Régua. An interesting return trip is to drive across the dam and turn left, then follow the road along the other side of the Douro, back to Régua. This road has some more interesting views of the bridges, with areas where you can pull over for photographs. It also runs alongside the train line so if the summer steam train is running there would be some great photo opportunities.

Having started a river cruise from Porto, the lock, "The Bagauste (Regua) Dam/Lock" is the third lock of five on the Douro.
Amazing engineering. It is as impressive as it 4 other sister dams (not the highest this time).
If you appreciate Waterwork engineering, you will love this trip.
When on a River Cruise, there is only space for the one boat in the lock.
Watch out for the free shower on the top deck!!

Barragem da Peso da Régua is one of the some dams located in Douro River, in Vila Real Region, in the North of Portugal. This dam is not very beautiful, but from here you can see nice views of Douro. Ok, if you are on way in Douro Region.

We first encountered the dam when driving along the N222 and stopped to watch a boat make its way through. There are convenient parking places and you can walk along the road that sits on top of the dam itself. One or two fruit sellers were taking advantage of the passing trade. The boat we watched had a swimming pool on the deck and it was interesting to see that the water didn't spill over even when the sides of the boat scraped along the walls of the lock.
Next day we took a short cruise upstream. Having only experienced travelling through small, manual locks on a narrowboat on English canals it was interesting to be a passenger on a cruise through this deep lock. Embarking from Regua you soon reach the dam and the passage takes over half an hour, which is a high percentage of the time onboard the 2 hour trip to Pinhao. There is not much clearance between the boat and the moss covered walls of the lock and at first the movement of the boat is imperceptible. Moving under the previously submerged gate we top deck passengers got an unwanted cold shower. Once through to the other side the Douro opens out and is more like a lake with artificial banks. In my opinion the river is more scenic downstream of the dam where it is narrower and more natural.
We took the boat one way and caught the train back for less than €3 each, equally scenic and along the opposite bank. That's highly recommended, buy tickets in advance from the station in Regua.

Timing is everything. A river cruise ship began its entry into the dam. It's amazing to see the depth and denivelation of the dam. Nice view from the dam.

As a rule, I am not particularly interested in such great works of engineering. Despite this, I looked at the local dam with curiosity. Built in 1965-73, it is 350 m long and 41 m high. What interested me was not its dimensions or how much electricity is generated here. We had the opportunity to watch a tourist ship pass through the lock. I was interested to see how efficiently it went. We drove past the dam several times and I only took one symbolic photo. However, while lowering the water level in the swimming pool with the tourist ship, I took a dozen or so photos because it was really interesting.
