I was particularly keen to get the iconic photo from a floating market. So, because I was there at a weekend, I initially tried the Tha Kha floating market. It was the least touristy of the four I visited. Sadly because it is a lunar market it wasn't at it's busiest so I wasn't able to get the typical floating market photo I was after. But it was certainly the most authentic. I hired a boat and had a wonderfully peaceful paddle (no motor) around the local canals, past local houses with dogs snoozing in the sun, lots of bird life and wonderful reflections as we paddled through the jungle. It was a real highlight and I really recommend it.
I also visited the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. The tourists outnumber the locals by 80/20! And there are lots of stalls selling tourist tat by the side of the canal. But there are still a few boats with locals selling vegetables and fruit so I was able to get the shots I wanted.
I had a brief visit to the train track market. But a train wasn't due for two hours so I didn't hang around. That also seemed quite touristy.
And then finally I visited the evening Amphawa market. The majority of the shops are on the canal shore. It seemed that most of the visitors were Thais rather than tourists out for a fun outing at the weekend. The items for sale didn't seem unduly skewed towards the tourist market and all seemed quite nicely made goods that you would be happy to buy to take home. The boats were mostly moored by the side of the canal and from which you could buy food. As the market gets into full swing 5 or 6 pm it gets unbelievably crowded and it's quite hard to move around because you are in a long crocodile of people walking on the narrow path with the shops on one side and the canal on the other! I went for a boat trip after sunset to see the fireflies which was magical and a real highlight. However I wished I had done another boat trip while I was there and visited the local houses/canals around during day too.

We visited three floating markets during our last trip to Bangkok (Lat Mayom, Amphawa and Tha Kha), and each had a distinct character. If pressed for time but interested to visit a good floating market, we recommend a Fri-Sat or Sat-Sun overnight stay in Talat Amphawa and being sure to visit Talat Tha Kha early in the morning (leaving Amphawa for Tha Kha at say, 8-9am). The journey from Amphawa to Tha Kha is just 10-15 minutes by tuk tuk (200 baht)-- to avoid confusion, do get the staff of your accommodation to write "talat tha kha" in thai script and preferably also try to imitate its pronunciation.
Our visit to the market did not coincide with an appropriate lunar date so the market wasn't in full swing, but it was nonetheless our favourite floating market in Bangkok; we especially enjoyed the beautiful rowboat tour (50 baht).
To return to Amphawa, wait for a songtaew at the drinks shack opposite the market's main entrance; it arrives on the opposite side of the road and will do a U-turn before stopping at your shack; this songtaew is essentially a feeder bus servicing the Meh Khlong-Tha Kha loop, and costs 20 baht/pax; once at Meh Khlong (pronounced "Meh Glong"), the driver will be able to direct you to the Meh Khlong-Amphawa songtaew service, which costs 15 baht/pax. This journey from Tha Kha to Amphawa takes about 40 minutes. If all this sounds like a hassle (it isn't, really), just take a 200-baht tuk tuk back to Amphawa.
Additional information: a minivan ride from/to Victory Monument to/from Amphawa costs 80 baht/pax, and takes about 1.5 hours, each way. The service runs hourly. We recommend taking a morning service (perhaps the 8.30am) from Victory Monument to Amphawa.

It's a great genuine floating market. And with very few tourists. Mostly old ladies in their small boats selling fruit, food, fish and vegetables. It's not open every day, do you must check before going there. Great for photography also.

We visited them based on Bolt driver recommendations, figured out it’s just a scam. Starting with ticket prices are not decisive and trying to fool people.
The place is extremely dirty and shops are just a scam. Even the driver was fooling us directing us to his relatives.
Extremely bad communication as if dealing with gangs.
Don’t do it

As all the other reviewers have mentioned, this was a delightful experience. The shops leading up to the canal were great. Prices awesome. Treats and goods unique and fun and tasty. Stock up here for the days snacks. The 20 Baht meal was one of our favorites of the whole trip. Very yummy. Loved the smiles and interacting with the women. Took the 20 minute paddle boat ride. Pick up a paddle and help. It's quite fun. We cracked up that we were asked to wear life jackets!
Here's the new tip....for 800 Baht you can take a 40 minute motorboat ride to Damnoan Saduak floating market. The canals were beautiful! After reading the reviews of Damnoan Suduak I had no desire to go. HOWEVER, taking the longer boat trip up the canal and maneuvering through the crowded market was actually a lot of fun. You won't get the happy smiling faces of the locals selling their goods, but it is an experience not to be missed. Our driver met us at the end of that market. It was an unexpected adventure.

After visiting Amphawa Floating Markets we took a tuk tuk and went to Tha Kha Floating Markets. The journey took about 30 minutes and Tha Kha is far off the main roads.
When we arrived, the markets are much smaller than Amphawa and a lot less busy but maintain a charm all of their own.
We look a boat trip along the canals through the jungle that surrounds the markets which I would really recommend. The trip cost 200baht for 4 people and lasted about 20 minutes.
I also had a delicious meal from one of the boat traders which cost 20baht and was fantastic.
I would recommend visiting here if you want something a little more peaceful and secluded/rural. We had a fantastic afternoon here and can't wait to visit again!

The Tha Kha Floating market was a real eye opener and a must to see when visiting. So pleased we got to experience it all. Its also very un commercialised too. Its a real traditional market. We got to go on a boat ride for 30 mins or more, a lady paddled us with our assistance around the canal ways, which was very tranquil. Definitely recommend a visit here.

This floating market is not touristy at all. It is smaller, quieter, and more authentic i feel. The boats were full of produce and some of the vendors were actually cooking on the boats. Local people would buy food from them and then sit down alongside the canal and eat. No one tries to sell you anything so there is no pressure. We really liked this market. I would recommend it. From here you can take a boat ride through the canals to the larger Damnoen Saduak floating market. The ride along the canal is most interesting and quite fun! You get to see how people live along the canals. You will see the people washing clothes in the canal, bathing in the canal, monitor lizards on the side of the canal, etc. a real view of rural life!

Less touristy, natural, and original style of thai floating market you can find it here. All the stuff is cheap local price. Boat tour is longer than in damnoen saduak yet it cost only half price. Very recomended

my sister and I just drove pass this floating market on Saturday, but it's late there already, so we missed the morning market that opens only on Weekends between 6:00 - 12:00. We liked Tha Kha so much, there are less built-up and more natural surrounding. I talked to some people who lived there, they said they wanted to remain the original style they had had before and avoided some of the more commercial business. Many nice things to eat and cheap...
It's about 10 kilometers beyong the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market... The best time to visit is around 7:00 am.
Can take a bus from Southern Bus terminal in BKK to Samut Songkram, then take a minibus to the market, or catch a taxi directly to there.
Don't miss..this

Hi there, may I know is Tha Kha Floating Market open everyday?
What is the best time to go there? I'm going to Maeklong Railway Station first, plan to go Tha Kha Floating Market next.
Look forward to your comment
Written 29 September 2018
Hi, ryanjyc304,
It is not open everyday.
In fact the first time I went there, it was totally empty.
No vendors, no boats.
Second time we went was on Saturday and it was lively.
So go there during the weekend,
We were also told that the market is open on special Budda day even that is weekday but that was the first time we went and was empty. So better go on weekends to make sure you can enjoy the market.
It is not touristic at all. Very local. Our guide was so happy to be there (she said it was her first time) and she was buying lots of fresh veg and fruits.
I also bought dates (dried fruits) and I am still enjoying them after bringing them back to my country.
Maeklong Railway Station first, is a good plan as we did the same. It would be extremely clouded with Chinese tourists.
Make sure you see the first train in the morning, after that head to Tha kha. Tha Kha is quiet and really local.
It is a small market but I liked the place.

Ik zou graag de Tha Kha floating market bezoeken. Hoe kan ik dat boeken?
Written 2 April 2018
Is the market empty on weekdays? I mean, it is closed or is it possible to walk around or maybe find someone to hire for a boat ride?
How about those days depending on the moon phase, is there any way to anticipate them?
Written 18 March 2017
Market open only on weekend. There will be little to see during weekdays. I am not sure about boat hiring, the best option will be hiring boat at Amphawa floating market. For the moon phase,if you would like to participate. You will need to look at lunar calenar found in google and check on the date near your visit.

Kindly advice on the transport getting to Tha Kha Floating Market, whether if it opens on the weekdays and its operating hours

Does anyone know if this market is open Sunday evenings or Monday mornings? Im' staying in Bangkok for just a single night in transition to catching my flight back to the U.S on Monday evening. I
would love to make this my final destination before heading home.

Ciao Julia, siete partiti da Bangkok per il mercato? Se si, qual è il modo migliore per arrivarci? Grazie mille!
Per quanto riguarda il Railway market invece ho letto che il treno è sospeso fino a nov. 2015, ti risulta?

hello!ldoes this floating market open only in the weekend, like Amphawa?how to get there?i mean, are in bangkok bus or van that go there?

Written 22 May 2015
I don't know if it is open on weekdays, I went on a Sunday.
To get there you can travel from Bangkok to Amphawa by bus/van and get a tuktuk from Amphawa to Tha Kha. The tuktuk journey is about 20 minutes drive.
I hope this helps!

Written 20 April 2015
Hi,
I took a bus from Bangkok Victory Monument station directly to Amphawa. The journey is about 1-1.5 hours long.
To get to Tha Kha we took a tuktuk from Amphawa which took about 20 minutes.
I hope this is helpful!
