Southern Sri lanka's largest ancient monastic complex dating back to 12th and 13th century is situated at this site named as Ramba Viharaya. Spread over 200 acres of land, the site is currently been actively excavated and the ancient monuments been conserved. It is a treat to watch the slow process of preservation and the dedicated archaeologists at work.

Several of the buildings are now exposed and their ancient foundations, pillars, unbroken plasters, balustrades, steps and ornamental stone carvings, terracotta swans etc. are available to view. Several ancient image houses has been identified. Among the note worthy exhibits are, one with the preserved base of a clay reclining Buddha and another with a standing Buddha.

There is a treasure of history associated with this site and ancient connections with Myanmar.

Visit to the south of Sri Lanka may not be completed without a visit to Ramba Viharaya
