About
The Fortress of Civitella del Tronto stands at 600 meters above sea level, in a very strategic position, at the old northern boundary between the Kingdom of Naples to the South and the Kingdom of the Holy See to the North. It is one of the largest and most important work of military engineering in Europe, characterized by its elliptical shape with an area of 25.000 square meters and a length of more than 500 meters.

The site itself has 2 defects, that the pavements have been as long as I have been going there, in shambles, and currently during renovations there is a long stairway to get there, indications are not given upon arrival to town, so if you are not aware of it, you do wander around before getting there. There is no access for disabled, which is a shame as it merits a visit by everyone. That said, it is extraordinary in every way. An outstanding fortress in itself, it also hosts modern art shows, interesting events and the staff is so very friendly! The town itself is a JEWEL! The view from the fortress is breathtaking.

The fortress is a place of exceptional historical interest. It was one of the last fortresses of the "Regno delle due Sicilie" besieged (in 1860-1861) during the formation of Italy, as we know it today. Weapons such as those now on display in the museum were used and the roads you will travel along were used by soldiers during that and other sieges. The place, in short, deserves to be visited, but also deserves to be cared for more.
There are no audio-guides, nor was it possible to make a guided tour.
The information material, often small, is present only in certain areas particularly circumscribed, for the rest you will have to move along a path not well specified. There is only a drinks machine, when a bar would be very nice.
Please take care of this place

Very well preserved/restored medieval town and a spectacular fortress with gorgeous views of idyllic landscape.
For a couple of moments I felt like being on the Game of Thrones set somewhere in King's Landing.
Italy has many hidden gems, this is definitely one of them. Ridiculous small amount as entrance fee - 5 EUR, if I recall correctly.

Above the small town of Civitella del Tronto is this large fort, which luckily was not damaged during the 2016 earthquake, and is open for visits. The fort is mostly a ruin, although some barracks have been renovated. One houses some typical soldier's furniture, and part of it houses the military museum (explanations are only in Italian). However, the main reason to enter the fort, is the panoramic deck with great views over Gran Sasso, and when we visited quite a few of the mountains were still snow covered. Go early, as then generally it is clearest.

I love visiting here, but having seen it over the past 10 years, it is a bit depressing to see it somewhat in disrepair. Some new rooms open, while a large amount has been closed off to the public. This may be due to earthquake damage from the past years and/or lack of funding, but overall the experience is still quite positive and there isn't a year that passes without a visit by my family.

It is quite a hike up to the fortress. There is a fee to get inside, but the panoramic view is incredible.

It is a very long walk and an uphill battle. But the views help take your mind off the panting and sweating. And the views are stunning! From every view point along the way to the Fortezza entrance. The cost is small €3 and there really isn't a way to go through the site, wander to your heart's content. Even the well is beautiful! There is a beautiful walk out along the top of the wall at the very backside of the castle the views are stunning! There isn't alot of signage throughout but there is a cute little gift shop.

The town is small and very ancient with small houses and narrow allayes. Found a nice restaurant with exellent pasta!
Take the time to walk around the fortress.

The second largest Fort in Europe and its history is interesting. I have seen numerous Forts around the United States and I have seen machu pichu, and this one is interesting and worth the visit of you're near.
