A giant of the prehistory ! Niaux Cave is one of the last decorated caves still open to the public. An 800-metre walk will take you to the Salon Noir, a majestic room where more than 80 paintings of animals offer themselves to you. WARNING! There is a single track access road to the caves with a couple of 90° bends. Traffic goes up AND down this road. As an owner of a big motorcycle, with pillion, on a wet day, you really don't want to meet anything coming...More

Thanks for your review "vivelafrancetoday" after your visit of the Niaux cave. To be exact, visits in English are available from April to November so you still have the time to come to Niaux ! See you soon in Ariege !

The paintings are an absolute must-see in this region, but we had a mixed-she group and be aware that they will simply refuse to take people they judge not fit enough to do the tour at the pace required. Also, walking sticks and other aids...More

Fantastic visit in a small group with a superb guide. Amazing atmosphere making our way up & down through grottoes by torchlight- to see the 14k year old paintings.

Excellent guided tour of the cave this morning. This is a really special place. You need to book a few days in advance in high season.

Thank you for your review! The Grotte de Niaux is unique and in great demand during this summer: there are actually a few days waiting at the moment and it is better to book in advance.

This is a truly fascinating, humbling and educational experience. Amazing just to stand where our ancestors had visited many thousands of years ago. The walk through the cave to reach the "black room" gallery was at a reasonable pace, with several stops en-route and a...More

A very instructive walk through a wonderful cave in the Pyrenees. The climax is reached in the salon noir where amazing paintings dating from up to 17,000 years ago adorn its walls. Anybody interested in prehistoric art should not miss it. It is 12 degrees...More

Humbling experience to know that prehistoric man could think in the abstract and was such a phenomenal artist! One of the few places where one can actually see the drawings up close and personal. Make sure to bring a close fitting warm jacket, good stable...More

While this two-hour tour to see the cave paintings is not for the faint of heart or foot (lots of slippery place and challenges to mobility), you will be transported to a world well-explained by your guide and deeply moving. Few things can bring one...More

We loved this cave, although it is quite a slippery and bumpy path to do the 1600 m round trip. One needs boots or super good walking shoes as there are very few added walkways and handrails. This is the only cave I have visited...More

There are lots of caves around that area. If you are driving from Spain it may be worth checking the other caves too. The drawings are fantastic though. Definitely worth a road trip. We booked a tour online before we went.
