Extremely impressive house and garden of an Edo-era merchant family that still owns the property. Beautiful furnishings and artifacts such as dolls representing samurai, a large tatami room, plus a 19c-early 20c office, including the city's first telephone. The garden is large and stately. An amazing property and a wonderful glimpse into the past. Located in a neighborhood of samurai-era... More

This is a house (still owned by the family) of a 17th century merchant. This merchant had great standing in the town. The house has the many rooms of a traditional Japanese house of the time and its modern additions fit in well. It even has a telephone cabinet within the house for the first telephone installed in Hagi. The... More

Kikuya House encompasses the refinement of the nearly 400 years old Japanese house, not to mention the beauty of the garden. Numerous films and novels have featured many of the furnishings. The elegance of old Japan is no longer inaccessible and can be savored at it's finest here.

This fabulous 17th century residence is a must see in Hagi. It's a large merchants house. Full of old household items including all the kitchen utensils, as well as art. There are screens, woodblocks, paintings and weapons including arrows throughout. Best of all is the amazing panoramic garden, viewable from several rooms. The house has two wells. If you want... Beautiful old residence set in a superbly designed garden. Well worth a look, the stonework especially the well cut into the large stones outside the old guestrooms were particularly impressive.
