There's a novel, "The Doctor's Wife," by Sawako Ariyoshi, [a more literal translation of the title would be " Hanaoka Aosu's Wife," a partly fictional account that became a movie, about how Dr Seishu Hanaoko, after reading a 4th Century Chinese text on herbal medicine, began twenty years of experiments, anesthetizing animals with a datura, aconite, and angelica-based concoctions, eventually experimenting on his wife and mother. Mother died, wife went blind, but he went on to perform the world's first breast surgery with anesthesia, administered orally, on 13 October 1804, when Seishu was 45 years old. This is said to be the first surgery under anesthesia anywhere in the world. Hundreds of doctors from all over Japan came to study under him: this is the place where he lived, worked, and taught. A must visit for anyone interested in the history of medicine. Good signage in both Japanese and English. Adjacent is the Flower Hill Museum designed by Kisho Kurokawa, with Seishu's tools, the robe (a replica) he wore when performing surgery, and other memorabilia. Note that the emblem of the Wakayama Medical University is now a datura flower in his honor, and they continue to promote his key teaching point: "you must use your eyes to see the outside of a patient before you can see inside." Know the patient well before you operate.
