文化学院の創始者、西村伊作氏の自宅で、すぐそばにあるチャップマン邸と共に国の重文指定されています。現代にあっても全く古さを感じさせない大正モダンの室内は一見の価値があります。また、この時代に給排水システムや給湯、さらにはボイラーの温風を暖房に使うシステムが完備されていることには驚かされます。

新宮駅から徒歩5分ほど。
入館料220円。西村伊作(1884～1963年)は大正期を代表する文化人の一人で文化学院の創設者。別荘のような外観をした建物は、建築家でもあった伊作が設計した自邸。1914年築で国重要文化財。1階には居間と食堂、2階には寝室と浴室がある。地下室にはボイラーがあり、そこから各階に給湯するとともに各部屋に温風を送る仕組みを備えている。一般家庭の設備としては当時最先端だったのであろう。

2018年11月は建物保存のため改修中でした。貴重なブルーシートに覆われた建物と公示の壁に掲げられたパネルをみることができました。ある意味、貴重な体験でした！

まったく運が悪いというか、運がないというべきか、全館改修中でシートに覆われていました。重要文化財で近代木造建築に興味のがあっただけに残念です。シートに覆われた館の写真を撮るのがせいいっぱいです。工事現場には期間は平成30年11月末日までと明記されていました。

そんなに期待はしていなかったのですが、オレンジ色の外観はハッとするくらい美しい。内部は、たまたま修復中ということでしたが、それでも広いホールはかつての社交場の雰囲気がそのまま。優雅な時間を過ごした場所であるということは十分伝わると思います。

こんなところに記念館があるのかという住宅街を歩いていくと突然ありました。
外観も記念館には見えないです。
しかし内部は意外と落ち着いたキレイな空間があり１階のダイニングは空港のラウンジみたいです。
これがまた重要文化財というから驚きました。かつて与謝野鉄幹・与謝野晶子夫妻など多くの文化人たちの社交の場であったそうですよ。
