As the sign says, "Ruins of Shingu Castle," there is no castle tower or anything else. All that remains are the stone walls. As you climb the stairs, you can see the Kumano River. On the other side is Mie Prefecture. You can see that Shingu is on the border between Mie Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture. However, the whole site was overgrown with grass, so the view was not very good. There are other tourist spots in Shingu, but I thought it was a shame that this place could be even more popular if it was properly maintained.

Absolutely beautiful view and many cherry blossoms. Wonderful to see at night with all the Japanese lanterns! Great place for a picnic. The actual castle isn't there, but the ruins and base of it are. Just know that it isn't really touristy. It's more the 'locals' kind of spot. EXCELLENT views!!!! Not crowded at all.

Having a rest at end of the Kumano Kodo trek we stayed in Shingu. Another hot and humid day, so the Shingu (Tankaku) castle ruin was a great destination to give the legs a gentle stretch, and find a green shady garden setting with views over the city, river and out to the ocean. Be ideal for a picnic and whiling away a lazy afternoon.

Look out for the speedy crabs at the small pond in the grounds.

It's not recommended because no signs in foreign language, only japanese , and nothing interesting is expected to encounter. Just only basement of castle remains , spring time must be better with flowers blossoming as in the picture.

We had a few hours spare while in Shingu and chose to visit the castle ruins. While only ruins, the grounds were fairly expansive and made for a relaxing walk as we were the only people there at the time and it provided a nice bit of nature in the middle of the city. While probably nothing exceptional compared to other castle ruins throughout Japan (this was the only one we visited so can't make a good comparison), it gives an excellent view of Shingu as it is the highest point in the area, besides for the surrounding mountains. Definitely worth visiting if you are staying in Shingu or have some spare time while in the area, but nothing worth going well out of your way to see.

I visited in cherry blossom season and it was delightful. It is a good climb up the several levels of ramparts to the top, but the reward from there is a view of Shingu interrupted by other isolated hills.

Stunning trees, really nice to walk around and enjoy the nature. We came back here the day we left to take some great photos.

There are no structures remaining from the original castle. It is a nice place to visit in the spring when you have cherry blossoms and Wisteria flowers according to the brochures. Lots of stairs to climb. This attraction is quite close to the train/bus station, less than 10-minute walk.

The castle ruins are nice to walk around, but they really are ruins. You do get great views of Shingu City from the top, and it's a nice picnic spot. Tip: One of the best times to visit is in the evening, when the hanging lanterns are lit up.

Few steps to climb up here but nothing dramatic. The grounds are peaceful and a nice place to stop and sit on a warm day.
Just wander through, enjoy the views across Shingu. No entry fee.
