Nagahama-jou is a concrete reconstruction in Nagahama, off of Lake Biwa. It contains a museum inside. If you're just interested in yoroi maybe the exhibits will not excite, but there are many artefacts on display from the Edo and earlier periods, if you want to know how Bushi used to live and about life in a castle town. Castle towns... More

As far as I know, there are only 12 genuine castles in Japan. Matsuyama, Hikone, Himeji, Hirosaki, Inuyama, Iyo-Matsuyama, Kochi, Marugame, Maruoka, Matsue, Matsumoto, Uwajima. Nagahama is a fake. Inside the "castle", it's just like any average concrete building. With elevators, and even with the floor embossed signaling, just in case some blind guests want to see the castle. I... More

Honestly, I enjoy the park, the castle from outside and lake view on top of the castle more than what's inside the castle. I like the exhibition but the explanation is only in Japanese. All I could do was just look at the exhibition and moved on to the next one until I reached the top and enjoyed lake view.... More

Comparing to other castles in Japan, it is not so nice. Hikone is but more interesting, for instance. The building itself is quite new and there are not many historical information. The best thing is its view from the top. From the tallest place you can see the Biwako and mountains around the castle. So it is better to go... More

This was one of the easiest castles to visit. You could see the castle from the train as you were arriving at the station. Just outside the railway station and a short walk down the street and you have reached the Castle Park. It did not take us long to walk through the park to the castle itself. We did... More

You can freely see the castle from outside, unlike some other castle (Hikone, ..) inside it's all modern (you will not see the woden part of the castle from inside). They will give you a brief history paper in English about the history of the castle but the exhibit is all in Japanese and unless you can read Japanese it... More

The historical site on the castle originally built by Toyotoma Hideyoshi. Completely destroyed years ago, supposedly used to build Hikone Castle. The property has been redevelopd as a copy of the original castle and is now used as a museum. No english explanations were available which was a pity as they have some potentially interesting exhibits and even the japanese... More

We stopped two nights in Hikone so on second day took a day trip to Nagahama. Time wise it's about 15 - 20 minutes by local train. First on our walking route was Nagaham Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1575. There is an excellent museum inside the castle and a great view of Lake Biwa from the top of... More
