Nicely preserved. One of few original castles and Hikone castle is among 5 castles designated as National Treasures. You need to take off your shoes and carry it around in a plastic bag which is provided. The steps leading to the top are very steep....More

We were visiting the castle off-season and were rewarded with quite a bit off snow, which turned the area into wonderful snowy landscape. There is not much to see inside and stairs in the castle are quite steep, but the outside aesthetics are just amazing,...More

We drove for nearly 3 hours to reach the castle and was not disappointed. One of the few remaining castles with its original keep in Japan and still very well maintained. We think Hikone is special because it really is much smaller (but not less...More

I did not research enough to know that this castle was on top of a mountain and that it involves a bit of climbing. I was surprised to see the castle to be very small with very steep stairs inside. But being one of the...More

One of the best castles in Japan. Original structure...many have been rebuilt after being destroyed in the war. Warning, the steps are very steep and dangerous, and when you get to the top, you get a view that is only marginally better than the view...More

It costs 1,000yen to enter the area. Firstly, you have to fight more than 120 steps from the entrance to Hikone castle. It's really hard. In the castle, there are also some steep flight of stairs, almost like ladders. Furthermore, those stairs are very narrow....More

Hikone Castle was ne of the highlights of our trip. The setting is superb, the history of the area is fascinating and on a weekday the moats, the gardens and the castle were a quiet haven. To view the lower levels of the site and...More

It's a nice little castle, a nicely decorative architectural style and historical significane for the establishment of the shogunate in late middle ages. Reaching the top platform of the main tower can be a challenge due to very steep stairs. The grounds are quite spacious...More

The castle is beautiful, incredible architecture and detail. It constructed with huge beams which you do wonder how they managed to move and build with. the interior is less impressive. the rooms are empty. gardens were lovely and very tranquil.
