Hikone is an attractive little town located on the shores of Lake Biwa. It is c 2.5 hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo then a 5 minute ride on the frequent local train. In addition it is c 35 minutes by shinkansen from Kyoto.
Hikone Castle is one the very few surviving original 17th century castles left in Japan. It is hugely impressive with no less than 3 moats and an enormous keep to defend it. The original walls and tower are well preserved and well worth a visit. By the entrance some of the original castle buildings now house an interesting museum.
It is possible to take a boat ride on the waters of the inner moat. The castle also overlooks a most attractive garden famous for its cherry blossom trees.
Hikone also retains some interesting old streets next to the castle with many original buildings and interesting shops. The local residents are friendly and welcoming.
The only challenge for visitors is that , unlike Kyoto, the local buses do not give information on routes and stops in English.

Hikone Castle is one of the 12 original castles of Japan. Like the rest, this castle is beautiful and unique. The grounds were bigger then expected. The keep itself was worth visiting. Visitors have to pay an entrance fee to visit the castle, it's well worth it! I spent probably an hour here visiting the grounds and the museum. Everything was marked. Some of the stairs inside the castle were steep. If you are in Hikone, then the castle is a must!

The visit to Hikone Castle can be a nice day trip from Nara. You can visit the castle as well as having a walk close to the lake. Fun fact: Hikone Castle’s mascotte is a cat with a samurai helm on his head.

Huge grounds. Need a lot of time to explore it all.
Unfortunately it was raining a lot, so I just viewed it from below.
You can take a boat ride around the castle.

Beautiful castle nearly 400 years old with unique gables.
The stairs of the Tenshu was quite steep and when I visited on Sunday they were packed.

I loved the view of Lake Biwa from the castle.

This is one of the castles which still preserve their original form. Hikone Castle is designated as a national treasure, and it is absolutely worth visiting. The inside is however not gorgeous as you think. You can experience here a life of Samurai.

The castle and museum is about 15-20 mins walk from Hikone station. It is surrounded by a moat and there is a palace museum. There is entrance fees. Also a park surrounding it.

Hikone Castle had been built since 1603. Initially it was a Buddhist Temple dated back to 1080 as a pilgrimage site in worshiping Kannon. This significant structure of Edo period was one of the five national treasure site in Shinga. The castle site was very large and did not miss the Genkyu-en Garden next to the Castle.

After Hemiji this is very small but still very nice. Lack of description in other languages is a pity.

Visited a factory near Kikone, and local staff recommended this hotel. Rooms are small (typical in Japan), great breakfast, but best of all is in the evening after a hard days work viewing the Castle (lit up) from the Hotel Onsen (hot bath) - what a pleasure.
