About
Ishikiri-tsurugiya shrine was founded 2677 years ago. In its origin, Umashimade-nomikoto deity started to enshrine Nigihayahi-nomikoto deity at Mt Miya in the Mt Ikoma range. 900 years later from its foundation (300), in other words, the period of Emperor Sujin, the shrine that is dedicated to Umashimade-nomikoto deity was founded at the exactly the right place that the present sanctuary of the shrine is located. That shrine was called Shimonosha (shrine located at lower place). In 927, the old document, which explained the deitities of Japan, called Engishiki-Jinmyocho, was written and it mentioned the name of this shrine. This document is the oldest evidence that can confirm the existence of this shrine. In 1650, the shrine dedicated to Nigihayahi-nomikoto deity moved from Mt Miya to Mt Kodo, and it was called Kaminosha (shrine located at upper place). In 1907(the period of Meiji), the government published the policy, which was about disposing shrines. Because of that policy, ea

A solemn archery ritual, an extraordinary space, what a wonderful thing. It's best not to have noisy companions. I also enjoyed the silence until the arrows were fired at full speed, alone. Splitting up into two groups, men with one arm undressed waited their turn to shoot.

Today, April 16th, was the spring archery ritual and the opening of the treasure museum, so I was excited to finally see the sacred swords Ishikirimaru, Kogitsunemaru, and Kogarasum (a copy).
It was scheduled to start at 11:00, but I arrived around 12:30, which was late, so when I asked "Where is the archery venue?" I was told the space beside the parking lot on the left side behind the main hall. It was next to the treasure museum, so there were people watching from the second floor of the museum. That's nice, I'll do that next time.
What a solemn space. The arrows in elegant costumes and people who looked like cute shrine maidens, chief priests, and assistant priests.
I wonder if even the dignified sound of the arrows ringing is an offering. That's nice.
The repetition of formal movements is also very tasteful, and time passes slowly. They exit in a line with bows at their sides to the sound of flutes. What is this, it's the best. Such free entertainment.
And then, the long-awaited Treasure Museum, where I can finally see Sanjo Arinari's Ishikirimaru. Sanjo Munechika's Kogitsunemaru. Apparently, you can see a copy of Kogarasumaru, which you can't see at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and a shadow cast of Ishikirimaru that was made with crowdfunding. (Apparently, the real one is later donated to the main hall)
The first thing I was surprised when I entered was the display of the remains of an old temple related to the Mononobe clan from the Asuka period. Suddenly, a hanging scroll by Maruyama Okyo and Takeuchi Seiho. ...I didn't hear about this, what is this all of a sudden? I came to see swords, but something incredible came out. Then there was Rai Kunitoshi and Bizen Osafune, I don't know much about them, but they tickle my fanboy heart. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine also has many swords donated to it, but I have not seen them in person yet. It's amazing... They are all beautifully polished, and even an amateur can see the beauty of the ripples. I learned something new from seeing how amazing the sharpeners are. I didn't know there were so many of them.

Ishikiri Shrine is based in the area of Osaka called Ishikiri. This is the main shrine itself but there is an upper shrine under the same temple, if you can get there by walking and climbing up the souvenir and store street.

Bow before entering the temple. If you see a lot of people walking around in circles around two pillars, they are performing the 'ritual' that walking 100 times around these stones would grant you your wish.

There are many shrines around the main temple as well. Save up your 5-yen coins and see all of them. One I liked near the back right of the temple has three stones. Rub the stones and touch the afflicted parts of your body that need healing. Do it for all 3 stones.

If the season permits, buy a ticket to the Treasure Hall and see holy relics and swords that are possessions of the temple. Get the special temple 'goshuin' stamp and omamoris.

If you have the strength, climb to the upper shrine. You will probably see no one there which is a far cry from the oft-crowded main shrine. There is a rest house here as well as the same omamoris from the main shrine area, but you get to enjoy the upper shrine in peace and quiet.

Lastly, if you want, there is a little waterfall in the upper shrine area. You can find two holy pools to pray at as well before descending.

Interesting street. A stretch of street with fortune tellers, shrines and dessert shop. Interesting local food. Near Ishikiri station. If you go by Ishikiri station, the street starts from the upper slope and you walk downward and two sides of the street fill with interesting shops. Local desserts. Many interesting along the street and the most famous is the Ishikiri tsurugi shrine. I did enjoyed walking along the street.

Even though the shrine's buildings are almost the same as those of other shrines, you'll feel a very strange atmosphere at this shrine.
Between the Torii gate and the hall of the shrine, a "Hyakudo-ishi stone" is established. If you visit the shrine 100 times while going around this stone, it is said that your wish comes true. It is found not only at this shrine but also at other shrines and temples. But, in this shrine, there are always visitors who are going around the stone with enthusiasm. It may be hardly seen in other shrines and temples.
There are also many shops and restaurants on the approach from Kintetsu Ishikiri Station to this shrine, and many of them are the houses of fortune tellers. No one knows why there are so many houses of fortune tellers. It may be good to experience the strange atmosphere that other shrines do not have.

It is said that he is affectionately called "Denbo no Kami" (the god of boils) or "Ishikiri-san". It was just around the time of Shichi-go-san, and there were many lovely children in kimonos. There were many people who were doing it 100 times.
