We visited the museum today and were impressed by all the replicas there: three types of Budda figures in Japan, Model of Usa shrine precincts, Model of Usa main shrine, replicas of Kokuzoji Three-storied Pagoda,... I highly recommend you visit Oita Prefecture Museum before starting your trip around Kunisaki or Yabakei.

Lots of examples of kote-e (trowel / plaster art). Earlier, we were taken on a tour of local kote-e in the city ... and we got to try our hand at making our own. There is an incredible $10,000 display that ... apparently, they used to light on fire and send out to sea during funerals. So beautiful!
