「日田往還」とは、放射状に整備された天領日田に向かう街道筋を、総称した名称です。ここでは、日田と中津を結ぶ「中津街道(中津道)」の日田市伏木地区に残された「石坂石畳道」について、言及して見ます。
この石坂石畳道は、開発の手が届かない山の中に有ったため、往時の姿のまま手つかずに残った数少ない旧跡です。
これについて、この街道の全容を探索したAPU大学の轟博志准教授が、考証及び製図した「ウオーキングマップ」の中の、石坂石畳道の説明には、次のように書かれています。
“中津街道最大の難所、伏木峠越えを改良するために築かれた石畳。嘉永三年(1850)、日田･掛屋の山田作兵衛が資金を拠出して普請された。”と。
更に続けて“1096年に日田市と旧建設省により整備をし、日田市により毎秋ウオーキングイベントが開かれる”と、付け加えられています。
全長1,260mの石坂石畳は、16箇所を九十九折にして勾配を和らげているので、比較的歩きやすいものとなっています。また、路面がぬれていると滑りやすくなる恐れがあります。それさえ気をつければ往復2.5ｋｍ、少し物足りない距離かも知りませんが、ウオーキングに適した石畳だと思います。
市主催のイベントがあれば、ぜひ参加してみてください。

大分県日田市から中津市を結ぶ国道２１２号沿線地域を日田往還と呼びます。日田は貞亨３年（１６８６年）に天領となり、さらに九州６ヶ国の天領を支配する幕府代官所が置かれました。そのため九州の政治、経済、文化の中心となった日田への道路が整備され､文化墨客や商人が盛んに往来しました。
現在も残る、日田往還の石坂石畳道。
12月に行ったのですが、昔ながらの石畳に苔が着き、入口の竹林から大変すばらしい雰囲気です。
