Zao Onsen, a small village 45 minutes by bus from Yamagata station (JPY 1000/p, hourly) is known for its onsen (hot spring), ski and unique "snow monsters" or "juhyo" (snow-covered trees forming monstrous shapes best viewed in late Jan - Feb). To see the snow monsters, we need to take the gondola/cable car from Zao Sanroku/Ropeway Station (855 m). Many... More

Zao rope way is one of the 3 rope ways in Zao mountain where the trees become snow monsters during winters. Taxi cost from Yamagatta JR station to Zao rope way base (800 meter level) cost about JPY 6000 and a round trip ticket to the 1660 meter level summit is JPY 2600 which is worth spending to see the... I bought a return ticket 2500 yen. But I walk 3 hrs return on top of the hill. You could walk 5 km from the town up here or buy one way ticket to save your time and walk one way up or down. The weather changes often here. On a sunny day you could see the lake. If it's... More

The Zao Ropeway is known for the "ice monsters". Because of the Siberian winds that blow over the mountain, the snow forms incredibly surreal shapes over the pine trees. Whether you're just interested in seeing the snow monsters or doing some skiing, this is the place to be! From Yamagata Station or Yamagata-Zao Station, you can take a bus to... More

Can get a nice panaramic view of Zao from above . There are two pitstops going each way and the waiting time isn't long either.

Zao mountain is famous for its "monsters", or snow covered trees. Because the wind is very strong there, trees have unusual shapes, and when covered with the snow they look like some fantastic creatures. It is a great view, both at night and day time, but remember that is is REALLY cold up there. Wear warm clothes, especially in winter.... More

A group of us visited Mt Zao Ropeway. The view was spectacular and worth going all the way up to the top. Now that I have done that, I will never go again, definitely not in winter. Reason: The carriage was jam-packed with tourists and skiers. As I was the last one in, my body was pressed against the doors.... More

We went to Rental Shiba, about 250m down the road (north) of Zao Ropeway and rented snowshoes for 2500yen (another 1000 yen if you need boots; poles were free). Then we paid for a one way ticket to the top of the mountain (two different gondolas) for 1300yen. Many people turned right to go up higher, but we turned left... More

I got my ticket with buses and ropeway for JPY 3100 with the tourist discout. I went there at 3 pm so that I can enjoy both the day and the night view of the Juhyo. In day time the view was no that good due to serve snow. Once the light was turned on that is another story -... More
