When I visited on May 2, 2024, the peonies at Taimadera Temple and its sub-temples were in full bloom before the holidays, and I was unable to see the peonies anywhere else, but there were still a few left in the Peony Garden, so I was able to enjoy a little bit. However, Kogyoen Garden, one of the three most famous gardens in Yamato, is not large in size, but it has a beauty that never gets old no matter how many times you visit. This year, the Shoin is open to the public for a special period every four years (last time from November 13 to 30, 2020), and although you would normally view the Shoin from the Kogyoen Garden, during this special period you can view the Kogyoen Garden from the Shoin, so if you can adjust your schedule, I recommend it. In addition, a special exhibition of the ceiling painting in the Guest Hall will be held from November 15th to November 30th, 2024 (see attached photo), so you will be able to experience the charm of Nakanobo during this time.

The temple grounds themselves are small, but there is a pond-style garden just below the three-story pagoda, making it a great place to relax. Taimadera Temple itself is not a place that many people visit, but you're sure to find relaxation in the garden, which you can leisurely gaze upon in the silence.

超一級品の大寺院です。中之坊、西南院、奥之院等から構成されている寺院です。二つの五重塔は国宝で創建当時のまま現存している文化財です。中将姫伝説とか・・素晴らしい縁起も有している寺院です。ここの奥之院はこの寺の奥之院と云う意味ではなくて、京都にある知恩院の奥之院がここ葛城市にあります。凄い飛地境内ですねぇ。ここには平安時代の「導き観音」があります。

當麻寺にある最古の僧坊ということで、「霊宝館」には様々な宝物が収蔵されています。中将姫に関する物も多く、私が訪れた4月下旬には、中将姫画像も特別公開されていました。
趣のある庭園「香藕園」がすばらしく、庭園から東塔も見えます。「ぼたん園」もあり、牡丹がちょうど見頃できれいでした。白い藤の藤棚もあって、そちらも見ごろでとてもきれいでした。
ぼたん園の庭から、客殿のガラス戸を開けて、中の絵天井を見ることができます。気づかずに通り過ぎないよう、ご注意ください。
書院で干菓子とお抹茶を頂けますので、日本文化も味わえます。
私の滞在時間は50分くらいでした。拝観料 500円 抹茶 400円

當麻寺の塔頭寺院のひとつで仁王門のすぐ先にありました。書院造りになっていて、広い庭園がありました。庭園の向こうには東塔と西塔も見え、見事な造りになっていました。

数多くの国宝、重文を有する「當麻寺」ですが、西南院、中之坊、奥の院と分けて考えると、詳細は私も勉強不足で不詳だが、ここが當麻寺の中心と云うか、當麻寺そのものなのではないでしょうか？本堂を始めとして拝観していたらきりがないほどの素晴らしい文化財を有する大寺院です。特に「當麻曼荼羅」の絵解説法は中々のものでした。この曼荼羅は中将姫が一夜で織り上げたと云う伝説が残っています。一番のお気に入りは無造作にと云う表現は失礼かも知れないが、境内の鐘楼堂の梵鐘、国宝なんですが、無造作に置かれているみたいな雰囲気がある、それだけこの大寺院がスケールが大きいと云うことにもなるのかも知れない・・。

当初、奥の院の御朱印帳目当てでしたが、調べていて写仏体験ができることを知り、奥の院へ行く口実もできたという流れでした。
時期的なもの、新型コロナのはやり始めの頃であったため、全体的に空いているようでしたが、写仏もひとりで落ち着いて取り組むことができました。
返るころに写経の方がお一人みえました。
中之坊の御朱印をいただくにあたり、先に奥の院へ参拝し、當麻寺用に御朱印を買ってそちらにすべていただきました。
御朱印をいただく際に、失敗したのは、写仏の絵をその後選んだため、同じ絵の御朱印が2つになってしまったことです。御朱印を書いてくれる方もひとこと確認してくれたら良かったのに、、、とちょっと思ってしまいましたが、まぁそれも何か意味があったことだろうと思うようにしました。
写仏の前に、写仏のお部屋を暖めておくので先に展示、庭園の方を拝見してという流れでしたが、庭園はまだ花の季節でもなかったですが、庭園全体の形状などからなかなか風情があってよかったです。

年に何回かは何らかの集巡会で参拝している著名寺院です。今回は「大和１３仏霊場」の一環としての参拝です。国宝の当時のままの姿で佇む五重塔や鐘楼など、見慣れた堂塔が立ち並んでいる懐かしい風景です。花の季節でもなく紅葉の季節でもありませんでしたが、庭園もそれなりに、堂塔はそのままに素晴らしいものでした。導き観音と中将姫伝説にかかる霊場として厳粛な雰囲気が体得出来る寺院でした。大型バス駐車場からの距離が長くて、２～３人のお年寄り(私も年寄だが)は参拝は諦めて「遥拝」に切り替えました。もう少し近いといいのだが・・・。

当麻寺・中之坊で特別公開（2018年11月30日迄）されていた《写仏道場》の絵天井（150枚）鑑賞を目的で訪問しましたが、絵天井に加え 《庭園[香藕園（こうぐうえん）] 》は紅葉時期の訪問であった為か 書院と苔に包まれた庭園の組み合わせた景観は想定以上の美しさでした（添付 写真参照）。庭園鑑賞ファンの方に 《当麻寺・奥院の浄土庭園》と合わせて こちらも訪問されることをお薦めします。入口にこちらの《庭園[香藕園（こうぐうえん）]》が大和三名園の一つとありますが、残り2庭園は【竹林院（奈良県吉野町）】と【慈光院（大和郡山市）】です。

尤も、奥院は當麻寺にあって當麻寺ではありませんが。知恩院の奥之院ですが。ここ，中之坊は當麻寺中の當麻寺と云うか、中将姫伝説が宿る「導き観音」の祈願所です。(この観音さんは毎月１６日にだけ公開されています)。私はここの写仏道場の「絵天井の間」の１５０枚の絵が気に入っているので、先月、１１月一杯で公開は終了しましたが、そのためにわざわざ参拝して来ました。なお、當麻寺は各エリアでそれぞれ拝観料が必要となるので、３か所とも拝観するには約１５００円程度が必要です。二つの五重塔や国宝、重文の堂宇などと総合的に考えると高いとは云えないが。それぞれ、庭園も魅力の一つです。
