What a fabulous use of space. The flowers were gorgeous and the stairs that allow you to walk among them is such a great idea! Really worth walking around and listening to the water running down the stairway.

There is so much to see at this complex, that we didn't see it all - but the hundred-step flower garden, the architecture, for a start, are well worth wandering around.

I went to this place because I am an architect who admires Tadao Ando, the great Japanese architect who design this place. It was designed to be a memorial of earthquake victim. The site is very large and has nice surrounding. The autumn colour is great around here. I recommend for any designers and art lover to come here.

It is not too easy and not too difficult to come here. You will have to take a bus from Kobe Sannomiya station. It takes about 30 mins. The stop is at the hotel where you will access to this memorial. There is a chapel for wedding ceremony also designed by Tadao Ando where you will have to check out.

Allow at least 1.5 hours to explore the area. I spent 2 hours there and it's getting dark. I felt I need more time to walk around the place.

Until we reached there, I had no idea about the journey through the whole project designed by the most renowned Japanese Architect Tadao Ando !!

It's a huge complex included Hotel, Conference, Auditorium and a grand scale Landscape . Total project is done with concrete and green area... huge number of steps, ramps. The authority allows Tourist and public to visit the complex which was the basic concept of the design.

Ignoring the criticism of the design sustainability, it's a kind of project to experience for any Architect... the approach towards each function, the journey throughout the garden, the ups and downs, the mild water layers to reduce heat of concrete, every framed view ... would explain the Architect's masterful thoughts.

You enter this Buddhist Temple through an opening in a pool of water which reflect the bamboo groves and surrounding countryside. There is tiered garden along the hill-side which should be explored.

Go here to enjoy the Hundred Step Garden, Made by Tadao Ando as a tribute to the victims of the great Hanshin Awaji earthquake. It’s beautiful, you’ll never see a concept as this: 100 beautiful gardens filled with flowers and vegetables, laying on the hillside. Looking down you see the Westsidehotel, buildings that house restaurants and shops, and ponds. All designed by Ando, the Pritzker price winning architect.

This site was dogged up to make Kansai Airport. The island asked Ando, who is the premier Kansai Architect to plan a site for them. Ando asked them to plant trees on the whole site and he promised he would help design a top notch project for the island. This is his vision.

Built by the famous Tadao Ando, many of the futuristic architectural spaces are no longer as splendid as they were designed to be. The clam shells paved water feature is no longer operational, and many spaces unused leaving it to decay and deteriorate. The botanical gardens is the main interest here. The 100 flower planters no longer have pretty flowers. The once exclusive tea house is no longer as exclusive on this hardly inhabited island.

Coming back to Hiroshima from Osaka at the beginning of Golden Week here in Japan I wanted to go somewhere nice, but not so crowded and since we had never been to Awaji we decided to give it a shot. The place has a little bit of everything. You can pay 500 yen for parking and bring your picnic lunch and enjoy a nice day in their beautiful garden. For a little extra they have a botanical garden and park. You can also go fishing just across the way at Tsubasa Harbor. You can also stay at the Westin Awaji that is on site. Nice place to relax and enjoy some peaceful time with the family.

I haven't been to a garden in a long time. I was unaware of the extent Japan held high regard for nature. Being inside that conservatory, that huge complex filled with flowers, trees, and sunlight, it was spellbinding. I enjoyed it to the fullest extent possible.
