About
The Yawatahama Ferry Terminal serves as the gateway for the ferry line that connects Shikoku and Kyushu. Passenger ships operate daily from Ehime's Yawatahama to Usuki and Beppu in Oita. In April 2022, the terminal relocated to a new location on reclaimed land and features a stylish new building with a modern exterior. There is a café called Petit Pont on the second floor, where visitors can enjoy food, drinks, and sweets while admiring the beautiful sea view. This spot is not only perfect for spending time during ferry trips but also recommended for those who want to enjoy a peaceful day gazing out at the calm Uwa Sea.

I’ve used these ferries between Yawatahama and Usuki/Beppu many times over the years and it is always a comfortable journey. Plenty of space to spread out on board, and it is easy just to rock up to the port before the ferry leaves to get a ticket. I usually get some sleep on board!

A ferry that connects Yawatahama and Beppu. About half of the seats are spacious tatami-style rooms used by groups like in the old days, and the rest are individual reclining seats, making it easy for individuals to use. There is a convenience store and a vending machine for cup ramen, so you will never get bored.

We had to leave our wonderful Dogo Onsen Funaya at 7:00 AM. We missed what would have been another seafood ecstasy. Bags were in front of our rooms for pick up since there is no elevator for guests, only for bags. We arrived at Port Yawatahama at 10:00, just before the 10:15 departure to Beppu. It was interesting that Port officials hand-measured our minivan's length to determine the fee. The total seemed to be high to me: 510,000 yen for our vehicle and 9 passengers.
The ferry is wonderfully maintained. The seating is plusher than any other ferry boat. There are tatami mats to rest on. There are private rooms, beds, showers -- everything but a casino. For lunch, the snack bar offered 600 yen bentos. I gave away most of the clementines I bought yesterday at the shopping arcade in Dogo Onsen.
The voyage of 3H was very relaxing as I napped and also interesting as I explored the many amenities.

Rooms shared by everyone. The passengers on board chat loudly, eating and drinking as if they were in an izakaya. Clearly the guests around him were annoyed. The customer next door warns him but ignores him. I think employees should be careful at least because of the circumstances around them. Clear nuisance without consideration. It was a room upstairs, but surprisingly it was very quiet. They all pay high prices to take advantage of it. The beginning of the journey was the worst start.

Saw before taking this ferry there was a lack of info or reviews on it in English, apart from the company's own web site - so here's a review and some pictures I took on board. Took a morning ferry on a Saturday from Beppu to Yawatahama and had no issues and a smooth ride. The first deck is for vehicles - when I was there it was nearly all semi trucks and few passenger vehicles. The next two decks are for passengers, and the top deck is an outdoor observation deck. There weren't many people on board, and a second class ticket was more than enough - first class only gets you a private room with a bed. There is food court style seating and large shoes-off areas to lie down or sit on the floor and have a "picnic" on the carpet (first come first serve) Also a small entertainment area with slot machines etc, vending machines here and there ofcourse, and a small cafeteria that sells relatively cheap food - though didn't try it so can't comment on the quality/taste. The ride was also pretty smooth as I normally get motion sickness but was perfectly fine for the entire 2h45 trip. Free wifi on board, though it was a bit slow. Ferry took off and arrived on time. Note the company has a few ferries which might be slightly different, so pictures are of just the one I was on.
