Kakumodate Samurai House Museum角館武家屋敷 was an interesting place to visit. There’s some history in that complex. Aoyagi family (青柳家) really lived there! Their house is the center of the “Museum”, built 200 years ago. Aoyagi (青柳) was a noted samurai in 1570, so the history could go back to 450 years ago. The Samurai Museum was one of the stops... Travelling to the North of Japan I have on many occasions passed by Kakunodate, yet never had the time to see it. This year however I was fortunate to visit the village and see the splendid Samurai homes and museums. The walk into the village is maybe 20 to 30 minutes from the railway station and along the way was... More

The samurai house was not as big as we expected, but was very well preserved. The rooms and gardens all have a wonderful flow to them. Better to be there earlier in the day as the crowds grow in late morning/early afternoon and it can feel a bit crowded in the small corridors.

We arrived in mid winter straight via Shinkansen to Morioka and immediate transfer. Kakunodate was just a 1 nite stopover for us and we walked there from JR St in heavy snowfall. The entrance to many of these museum were blocked. While it's possible to still walk past main entrance, the garden compound was filled with 3 feet of snow.... More

The town of Kakunodate is well worth a stop. On the bullet train route between Akita and Morioka a delightful small town. They speak very basic English at the Info centre to the right of the station. Hire push bikes at the taxi place across the road to the left (300 yen/hour) and spend 2 to 3 hours easily, roaming... More
