I am lucky to have friends in nearby Takase so this was the closest town of note. Interesting place with a great history of woodcarving. Zuisen- ji at the top of the town is a must see and the streeet leading up there is exactly what I wanted to see in my japan experience. People doing what they have been doing for generations with fairly traditional methods in lovely japanese houses and shopfronts

This little town is obviously a popular stop for the tour buses. The parking lot at the bottom of the street leading to the temple was full of busses when we stopped midmorning.
The temple gate is one of the finest examples of woodcarving that I have ever seen. The street leading to it is replete with smaller examples of the carvers' skill carved into posts, transoms and even the phone boxes. There are several shops where you can observe the artisans at work.
The combination of mountains, a small town, and a thriving woodcarving industry immediately brought to mind the little Bavarian town of Oberammergau that we know so well. So is Inami the O'gau of Japan? Or is it the other way around?
I definitely recommend spending an hour or two here if you are in the area.

A great traditional Japanese street scene, topped by an impressive temple and awash with wood carving genius.

The temple, art of wood curving, their people, their sake, and tasty yet crunchy rice crackers...
Everything I put my hands on, hear about, observe, and taste became my amazement.

A very pleasant little town with many specialist wood carving shops. You can see the craftsmen working in the shops, and go in to purchase work done on site.

I will be in Toyama from 9:00-17:00 on a Saturday in October. I would like to visit Inami. Where can I find the bus schedule from either Toyama or Takaoka to Inami and return?
