“Great stop over on the way to Ainokura”

Stopped to eat lunch in this small village and enjoyed the intimate setting. The area where the restaurants are, which is the world heritage one, felt much nicer than the one with the minshukus, which felt quite lonely/abandoned.

The first stop you can consider to drop by before going to Shirakawago . If you stay in Kanazawa, first take JR to Shin Takaoka station. Then , take the Kaetsunou bus terminal no.8 to Suganuma and also take the same bus to Shirakawago. This route considers less crowded than the bus in Takayama. Come a bit early like 9am so that you won’t see many people. February is good timing to get full snow.

Small but quiet to get scenic view & good photo shot.

The smallest of the Gassho-zukuri villages

Suganuma is the smallest of the three villages with gassho-style farmhouses designated as UNESCO World Heritage site. Majority of tourists will skip this village so it is a better place to explore and enjoy a more peaceful and rustic atmosphere. However, due to its small size, I will prioritise Shirakawa-go and Ainokura and skip Suganuma.

Bus to KANAZAWA

Visited this jewel of a small village and found it so peaceful after the crowds of Shirakawa-go.

You can access this place from Shirakawa-go by the green World Heritage bus which runs approximately hourly (840yen).

Note that if you want to catch another onward bus to Kanazawa, you have to walk to another bus stop about 500 m up the road- it is NOT the World heritage bus stop. The coordinates of the Kanazawa stop is (36.4009788, 136.8828410).

Lovely place ...

Of the 3 gassho-zukuri villages, this is supposed to be the smallest. It is also relatively free of tourists. Good to visit this along with the more popular Ogimachi, Shirakawago as you feel less hurried and crowded.

Smaller village of the 3

Having been to Shirakawago, packed with both local and foreign tourists and then to Ainokura, the average size village, then Suganuma, the smallest of the 3, I would think what exactly do you want to see and experience.
Although it is small, it’s unique in itself, with a lift in the tunnel and beautiful view of the houses from the hill.
No hassle as it has less tourists, more serene and peaceful.
We had a unique lunch, noodle with local mountain vegetables and mushrooms.

Beautiful small Village with Gassho style house

Only 9 traditional Gassho style house int he village, the smallest among the 3. There is an elevator from the bus terminal. Worth a visit.

Charming compact village

I loved Suganuma although it is quite small. Gassho house museum was interesting where I could learn about people's life at Gassho house and how they used to make gun powder in the bast at the village.

SMALL VILLAGE WITH IMPACT

There are quite a few little villages in the Gokayama area, but this being one of the smaller and being complete makes it special. I was able to walk around it in less than an hour regardless of the snow on the ground. I may have been happy with another village but was very happy with Suganuma for I was able to see a self sustaining village complete. Storybook look; Japanese Hansel & Gretl.
There is an elevator for elderly and handicapped from parking to village.

Small village, really beautiful

The houses are small, village is small, but unique architecture. Two small museums costs 300JPY to enter both of them. People here are really friendly, and proud of the village. Scenery in snow is very beautiful.
